Tigers Hold Off High Point |
CLEMSON - Chey Christie had 19 points and 4 assists to lead Clemson to an 88-81 win over High Point on Monday night.
Clemson (2-0) never trailed in the second half, but failed to deliver a knock out blow to a game Panther (1-1) team. The Tigers gained their largest margin at 59-49 with 15:20 remaining after a Vernon Hamilton steal lead to an Olu Babalola dunk. High Point remained in striking distance and cut the Tiger advantage to 82-77 on a basket by Zione White at the 1:24 mark.
However, Babalola would make three out of four free throws and a Sharrod Ford’s dunk would put the Tigers up 86-79 with 30 seconds left.
“I give them all kinds of credit,” said Purnell. “I thought they (High Point) played their butts off. They played with emotion and really caused us to struggle all night long. They keeped us off balance. They are the type of team that I feared might give us some problems…. a quick penetrating team and they play a tight man to man.”
Along with Christie’s 19, Tigers got balanced scoring with double figures from Hamilton (12) , Ford (17), Babalola (12), and Chris Hobbs (15).
High Point was led by Zione White with 26 points.
Ford put the Tigers up 45-41 with an offensive rebound and score with 49 seconds remaining till half.
Clemson returns to action after Thanksgiving on Saturday against Wofford at 2:00 PM in Littlejohn.
