Swinney named to Paul Bryant Award Watch list |
ATLANTA (October 19, 2017) – Officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl released the midseason watch list for the 2017 Dodd Trophy. The list includes 20 of the nation’s top college football coaches representing seven conferences and Notre Dame.
The Dodd Trophy, college football’s most coveted coaching award, celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity – the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd’s philosophy. The midseason watch list was created through a selection process by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, taking into consideration each program’s graduation rate, commitment to service and charity in the community, current performance during the 2017 season and Academic Progress Rate (APR). Of the 20 coaches on the midseason watch list, the Big Ten leads the way with five coaches, followed by the ACC (4), Pac-12 (3), Big 12, SEC and AAC (2), Mountain West (1) and Notre Dame. Seven of the 20 coaches remain undefeated going into week eight. “We are only halfway through the college football season, and we have already seen major shakeups and stiff competition throughout all of the conferences,” said Jim Terry, Chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundations. “With an abundance of coaching talent throughout all of college football, this year’s midseason watch list exemplifies coaches who have stood out on the field, strived for academic excellence and immersed their teams in the local community.” The 2017 Dodd Trophy Midseason Watch List: Paul Chryst – University of Wisconsin Mark Dantonio– Michigan State University Dave Doeren – North Carolina State University James Franklin – Penn State University Scott Frost – University of Central Florida Mike Gundy –Oklahoma State University Clay Helton – University of Southern California Brian Kelly – University of Notre Dame Mike Leach – Washington State University Rocky Long– San Diego State University Urban Meyer – Ohio State University Mike Norvell – University of Memphis Gary Patterson– Texas Christian University Chris Petersen– University of Washington Mark Richt – University of Miami Lincoln Riley – University of Oklahoma Nick Saban – University of Alabama Kirby Smart – University of Georgia Charlie Strong – University of South Florida Dabo Swinney – Clemson University
