Deon Cain on falling to sixth round: "It was a shocker"

by - Assoc. Editor -

'WRU' has another player in the NFL with the addition of Deon Cain. He is now one of six Clemson receivers to be drafted in the first six rounds since 2013 alongside DeAndre Hopkins, Martavis Bryant, Sammy Watkins, Mike Williams, and Ray Ray McCloud III.

Despite several projections much earlier in the draft, the former Clemson receiver slipped all the way to the sixth round with the Indianapolis Colts at pick No. 185 overall.

Cain was surprised that he dropped that far down in the draft.

"I mean yeah, of course, I was always surprised because going into this I heard late first round, second, third and all this,” Cain told the media Saturday. "It was a shocker, but hey, it’s always still a blessing to get my name called. It still feels like I’m the first pick of the first round at this moment. It can’t change my spirit right now."

Cain knows that some of the off-the-field issues in his past probably hurt his draft stock.

"I heard things like off the field issues and things like that. Production level and all that stuff – it’s a lot of negative that comes to it, but I’m still a growing player and growing person,” Cain said. "Everybody makes mistakes. I learned from all my mistakes that I encountered in college, and as a young man I am still growing."

The gifted playmaker could become one of the biggest steals of the entire draft if he can harness all of his potential that was not entirely seen at Clemson. Remember he has only been playing the position for a few years and will get better with time along with the right work ethic. Playing with a healthy Andrew Luck would be helpful too.

Cain led Clemson in receiving yards (734) and touchdown receptions (6) this season, logging 58 catches.

The Tampa, Florida product totaled 20 touchdown catches over three seasons which is tied for fourth-most in school history.
