Clemson makes women's basketball coach hire |
Clemson has hired former Florida coach Amanda Butler as its new head women's basketball coach, TigerNet confirmed Thursday.
Clemson's Board of Trustees approved the hiring and contract for the 46-year-old former Florida player in a teleconference Thursday. Butler coached at her alma mater 10 seasons, making the NCAA Tournament four times and the Women's NIT four times with a 190-136 record overall. Before Florida, she coached two seasons at Charlotte, going 40-22 and earning Atlantic-10 coach of the year honors and a share of the regular season championship in 2006. She also served as an assistant coach for USA Basketball's Under-19 World Championship team, which won a gold medal in 2009. Butler takes over for Audra Smith, who was not retained after a 52-99 run as Clemson's coach (9-70 in ACC play). Butler went 71-85 in SEC action at Florida before she was fired after a 15-16 (5-11 SEC) campaign in the 2016-17 season. "We have high expectations for all our athletic programs and we need a new direction and fresh perspective in women's basketball," Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich said in a news release on Smith last month. Butler is a Mt. Juliet, Tennessee native. Hello Clemson!
