CBS ranks Clemson athletics top-10 for 2017-18 season |
CBS Sports released its athletic program rankings
for the 2017-18 college sports season, where a weighted formula boosted Clemson into the top-10.
The Tigers, carried by high metrics in football and men's basketball, came in seventh overall (428 points). Ohio State led the way (510.50) with strong showings in all five categories measured, followed by Alabama (492.25), Oklahoma (477.50), Michigan (453), Duke (445.50) and Notre Dame (439). CBS explains the formula as placing 2.5 times as much emphasis on football and two times more for men's basketball compared to women's basketball and two wild-card spots, which feature the two best efforts in other spectator-centric sports nationally such as baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, gymnastics, lacrosse, hockey and wrestling. Directors' Cup champion Stanford checked in at No. 9 in the CBS rankings. Clemson finished 52nd in the Directors' Cup, which weighs a wide variety of sports equally in its measure. Among rivals regionally, Georgia Tech finished last among Power 5 schools in the CBS metric, at No. 119, while South Carolina ranked four spots lower than its Directors' Cup standing in a tie for 30th. In the 2017-18 campaign, Clemson posted top-20 finishes in football, men's basketball and baseball in the same season for the first time since 1989-90. CBS 'Best in College Sports' Ranking 1.
