Where do recommend staying in San Francisco for football?

Trying to make some reservations for the Natty before everything fills up. Any recommendations around the stadium or better to stay more downtown?
Any restaurants, bars, etc to hangout. Thanks.

Well, I guess the stadium is actually Santa Clara.

Is that area better than San Fran? I know nothing about it.

I would highly recommend Los Gatos. Wonderful town, great bars and restaurants. If you're up for a little longer drive, try Santa Cruz.
Don't stay in SF unless you're really interested in SF.

If you were gonna spend 3 nights, would you stay around

the stadium?
Or is there a better place to stay that is still within a 30-45 minute drive that would be "better" for a slightly extended stay?

It all depends.
Personally, if I were going with my wife, we would probably stay in Los Gatos for a night or 2 for the game because it's a 30 minute drive to the stadium from there. Then we'd go to the shore at Santa Cruz for a few days. We like the drive between Los Gatos and Santa Cruz. We like Hwy 1. We like the shore and the walruses under the pier. And there's great seafood restaurants around the marina.
We have some good friends that got married at a country club outside of Los Gatos and spent a week around that area for a vacation. My wife is from the Bay Area. And our friends own property in Los Gatos. So, we're biased.
But, I'm A) born/raised SC boy and B) a football fan. So, If it were me going with my buddies, we'd probably try to stay near the stadium in Santa Clara and look for a place within walking distance of some nightlife. We might also consider staying in Los Gatos simply because I know it and know what it offers.
Either way, I wouldn't even consider SF. And I definitely wouldn't fly into SFO. Oakland is much more convenient. I really don't think you can go wrong with any of the nearby options. And if you just have to check a SF visit off of your bucket list, then drive into the city one day. Look at a map and figure out if you want to drive over the Golden Gate. It's impressive, but the tolls are highway robbery.
So, yeah, depends on what you're going for and who you're going with. Good luck and have fun!

Re: THANK YOU! Please-Airport Options are Best for Santa Clara

I've flown into SFO, OAK and SMF. I've never flown into San Jose, because everytime I look the airfare is around double the cost of anything else in the region. Maybe they give away cake and handjobs in SJC. I wouldn't know. Never flew into that airport. If money isn't a factor, SJC is probably the most convenient.
I'll never fly into SFO again. There is nothing about that airport that is convenient. If I had to attend a conference being held at SFO, I'd fly into OAK and drive there.
OAK is my preferred airport for anything in that general area. Easy in and Easy out. It can be a little confusing getting out of there and pointed in the right direction, but it's not that crazy. As mentioned before, there are some bad neighborhoods in Oakland, but I've seen worse near other airports.
SMF is also very good, but it's not super-convenient unless you're actually going to Sacramento. I sometimes fly here and drive south if I find I can save a few hundred bucks on airfare.

I have only ever flown into/out of SFO, 8-10 times. Maybe you had a bad experience, but I found it easy and no big deal.
To the OP, I’d skip San Fran completely and do the drive from Santa Cruz to Monterey. That’s a great idea. When you get near the Pebble Beach portion, stop and pay the fee to drive through the golf resort along the ocean, it’s worth every penny. If you have a few hours available for Monterey, visit the aquarium.

One more thing. If you end up hitting Santa Cruz to get on Hwy 1, go South. Drive to Monterrey. It's pretty cool and worth a visit.

In that case, he should go a few miles more and check out 17 mile drive.

I agree. You can make a day out of Monterrey. He could play Pebble Beach. Now, I'm spending his money like a professional!
But, you're right... that's a beautiful area.

Spyglass is very good also, but if you're going to be out there you might as well load up the credit card and play Pebble. When I was out there many years ago, I stayed in Carmel and played Pebble twice and Spyglass once. Prices weren't quite as outrageous back then.

but for a cool sports bar, I always liked Keezar pub near Keezar Stadium. People really like it and it is classic. It should.have good reviews. I assume it is still there.

I'm there on business sometimes (as in, more than I care to be). Try Aloft in Santa Clara. Very, very nice.
