Vic Beasley vs. Jadeveon Clowney - 2013 final stats
Jan 4, 2014, 8:43 PM
|
|
In his first full year dedicated to the position, Beasley dominated Clowney's stats. I've included Clowneys 2012 numbers as well. Beasley matched the numbers that had everyone saying #1 pick - in his second year playing the position.
Sacks: Beasley - 13 Clowney '13 - 3 Clowney '12 - 13
Tackles for loss: Beasley - 23 Clowney '13 - 11.5 Clowney '12 - 23.5
Yards loss (sack and TFL) Beasley - 229 Clowney '13 - 77 Clowney '12 - 186
Forced Fumbles: Beasley - 4 Clowney '13 - 1 Clowney '12 - 3
Who would you pick first?

Spurrier probably left so many empty beer cans in the back that you wouldn't be able to get in the car.

I wonder who played against better left tackles? Also, how about head-to-head, who had more impact in the state championship games? EJ

Nice deflection...still waiting to see those head-to-head stats. And, the NFL scouts will let us know who is the better player. EJ

Defensive statistics from Clemson vs. South Carolina 2013
Jadeveon Clowney:
- 3 tackles (2 solo, 1 assisted) - 1 sack
Vic Beasley:
- 5 tackles (5 solo, 0 assisted) - 2 sacks
...you were saying?

The only way the score would be relevant is if Vic and Clowney were the only 2 guys ever on the field.

NFL scouts don't care about individual games
Jan 4, 2014, 9:01 PM
[ in reply to Re: Vic Beasley vs. Jadeveon Clowney - 2013 final stats ] |

They care about overall performances. Overall, Beasley's stats this year were better than Clowney's both this year and last year.
And by the way, Beasley had to play against 2 triple option teams this year (who never pass), 4 great offensive lines (Georgia, Florida State, South Carolina, Ohio State) and one run heavy Boston College team that also has a good offensive line.
He has had to play against last year's SEC leading rusher (Todd Gurley), this year's SEC leading rusher (Mike Davis), this year's national leading rusher (Andre Williams), and this year's 3rd leading rusher (Carlos Hyde) and 3 of the best run offenses in the country (Boston College, Georgia Tech, Ohio State).
Not to mention, he had to play 4 great quarterbacks (Aaron Murray, Jameis Winston, Connor Shaw, Braxton Miller), and 3 dual threat quarterbacks at that (Winston, Shaw, and Vad Lee).
Plus, Beasley was actually able to stay on the field without getting winded. Say what you will, but facts are facts my friend.

"Ready for the NFL" takes on a lot of meanings
Jan 5, 2014, 2:27 AM
|
|
To be honest, most scouts don't pay enough attention to production of the players. All they care about is if the body structure of the player and if the way they use their size/speed fits the position. The reason the scouts love Clowney and say that he is ready for the NFL is because of this. He's big, fast, and has the wingspan of a Bald Eagle.
Beasley is like a speeding bullet off the edge and is a good tackler in space, but he doesn't have the size that the scouts want. That's really the only reason the scouts like Clowney better.
The same things happen with quarterbacks. How many times have we heard the scouts rave over Logan Thomas just because he's tall? How many times have we heard Russel Wilson get criticized just because he's short (even though he's a great QB)?
Let's face it: a player can ball out all year and put up freakish numbers, but in the end all the NFL cares about is body structure and potential. If I were an NFL coach, I'd get the guys that are going to give me production now, not later on down the road when I develop their skills.
So while Clowney is more "ready" for the NFL in terms of scout opinions, I think my personal opinion is that Beasley would make more of an immediate impact. That being said, I also think he needs another year. Because the scouts do rave so much over size, he can use another year to put on some pounds and hopefully get the scouts to love him just as much as they love Clowney.

Don't let his size fool you, he is very strong. He routinely abuses much larger fundamentally sound tackles with a bull rush.

One of Clowney's sacks was really Boyd sacking himself. That one doesn't count, just like Clowney doesn't count.(at least not past 3)

Who would I pick? Well, Vic has had an awesome year, and definitely deserves a higher pick than he will actually get (at least in my view), but about 90% of guys who have any kind of reasonable understanding about how most NFL decisions are made would pick Clowney, including myself and probably the Texans.

like it, who is clearly not ready to be a team guy, over a guy that is already as good, with a better upside, that is willing to do anything to help the team?
Wow.

Great stats! That's an easy choice! Beasley has certainly elevated his play to the level of a Heisman candidate if he chooses to return, besides Clowney is going to the NFL.

Would be interested in seeing how Beastley stats over the last 2 years total compare to the Doo Doo's. Plus how many blocked passed they both had over the last 2 years. Of course Beastley only played 1 in 4 snaps last year. Go Tigers.

Unbelievable! Truly unbelievable! I think that most logical Gamecock fans would concede that Beasley is a very special player. I would like to think that most logical Tiger fans would also concede that Clowney is a very special player. Then again, maybe not? The sheer magnitude of irrational thinking on this board is often stupefying!
