So what Republican has a strong chance at the POTUS in '16?

I'm curious what some of you think. The only one that I thought had a fighting chance was Christie, but that's out the window. Mr. Bully is being fried by a federal investigation as we speak...
Also, just to be clear, Rand Paul does not have any shot. Nor does Ted Cruz. Or Sarah Palin. Or Mitt Romney (0-3?). Or any of the other dopes from 2 years ago.
Paul Ryan maybe?
Discuss.

I thought that we had a shot with Marco Rubio. Although he has moved too far center and would look like a compromise. He isn't as attractive as a candidate as he used to be in 2011-ish.
I really do like Mitt. His business experience is second to none. His policies just never really came together in the last election. He never could articulate well enough what his plan of action was going to be as POTUS. I will get fried for saying this, but I think he is the least crooked of them all. Even though he is filthy rich, I don't hold that against him. I think he is a good guy.
Jeb Bush has no chance unless he changes his last name.
Huckabee is a progressive at heart. Like McCain was.
Scott Walker has done a heck of a job in Wisconsin. I would like to see Tea Party and Pubs get behind him. What he has done to create jobs and a surplus in WI is really impressive.

You are right. They won't but if they did, it would be a landslide. This country is far more center right than left. We just need to put forth a candidate that appeals.

Interesting answer.
I actually think Bush would have a better chance then you give him credit for. Six years later, Dubya has been largely forgiven and Jeb has a Latino wife, speaks fluent Spanish, and is a progressive in terms of immigration. That's a huge plus for him.
I don't think Huckabee will run and I think his entire brand is stale at this point. Same goes for Romney.
Speaking of Romney, I think he's a good guy too. I think he's a good, honest, hard-working person. With that said, I also think he's compassionate or in touch enough with the general electorate. It's what lost it for him two years ago. He comes across as stiff and impersonal.
Walker could be a possibility for sure.

Who said that? I didn't. To answer your question, no, it doesn't, but it does make you "generally" more attractive to the Latino electorate, especially in a general election. I'm not saying it makes sense, but these things come into play, unfortunately.

bridge the two different sides of the party. There is no way for a Tea Party candidate to be nominated, none. Then when the nominee is finally announced, the Tea Party people will poo poo him since he's "not conservative enough" and he'll lose votes.
Guessing potential nominees will start to come into focus once the mid-term elections end in November.

by all accounts paul ryan is not running. I am not sure if christie would have made it through the GOp primaries which as of late has resembled human #### fighting to see who is the biggest BA conservative. Unfortunately you have to appeal to the mouth breathers that show up to vote during the primaries, and by then you have damaged your national election hopes with an endless slew of extremist sound bites that carried you in that process. -see mitt romney

lets face it, most voters don't know a #### thing about government and politics and politicians don't know a #### thing about how to fix things. People just vote for whoever looks the best / sounds the best / and makes them feel good at night. Meanwhile politicians just do whatever will get them votes. I liken it to the parents that give their kids whatever will shut them up.

I think he's going to let the other fools kill themselves off and see which can out extreme the other and then swoop in and be the voice of "reason" for the Republican party. He'll just have to get through the pub primaries but he did it before and I think he'll do it again. The republican party/tea party will fall in line behind him with their support because of their mutual hatred of Clinton.
But really, I think the pubs have a great shot at winning the election no matter who they run (this is scary) because I just don't think the youth are going to vote like they did for Obama. Clinton is the only choice that might get them voting, but I don't think she carries the 'cool' that Obama had.

Unless the GOP makes some major changes within the current party setup, I don't see how they can win. Right now, to win the party primaries a candidate has to go far, far to the right to impress the "Tea Party" tail that wags the Republican dog to get Republican Primary voters, who tend to be the most right wing people in the party. It appears the more moderate party members wait till the end to exert their influence. This is how you end up with an obnoxious dolt like Santorum sticking around through the final primaries, creating damage at a time when you should be concentrating on unity for the real election. This requires the candidates to make statements geared to that far right audience. Then, when he is selected, the candidate has to move back toward the middle and renounce some of his more radical statements which appealed to those far right voters to try and impress the electorate in the middle-moderate group which makes up most American voters. This offends the far right who feel that they have been lied to, and doesn't really impress the average middle ground voter because it makes the candidate appear, at best, as wishy-washy, at worst as untrustworthy. This hurt Romney, although to be honest, he reminded most of us too much of the disaster that was Bush II to win anyway. Until the the Republican Party can remove the perception that their farthest right members(which to most moderates appears to be the far right fringe of the political spectrum) run the party, I can't see them winning another Presidential election.

RAND PAUL.
Feb 21, 2014, 9:08 PM
|
|
I'm so sick of hearing "oh, Christie was the only one with a shot" etc.... thats the same line of thinking that nominated Ford, Dole, McCain, and Romney. Moving to the middle does not win elections for Republicans. If the white middle class had turned out in 2008 and 2012, BHO would be in Chicago organizing communities.
If the GOP nominates another mealy-mouthed moderate, they lose. Their best bet is to nominate a real conservative not tied to anyone in the Bush era who will inspire. There can be no doubt but that Rand Paul is the inspiring option in 2016 - even to the young. Cruz is the loud mouth who will also draw conservative support.
The GOP has a deep bench to draw from this go around and the debate and enthusiasm will create excited while the country sees Hillary yawn.

Rand Paul does not stand a chance. He has a tendency to throw anything and everything at the wall to see what sticks, and my opinion, lacks any real political compass. Like the rest of the pack, he seems more interested in getting elected than he does offering any real solutions to our country's problems.

Really, then you should be aware that the "claim of lack of foreign policy experience" is a statement that has been made about every non-Washington insider that has ever been nominated for the Presidency and really it rarely plays out well. However, Reagan's lack of foreign policy experience was one of his shortcomings, his true strength was domestic policies.

Never fight a land war in Asia and never try and talk sense to a Ron Paul supporter. If you want to argue with a Ron Paul supporter it's best to just pull up the Ron Paul website and argue with that, because their argument will be a cut and paste from that site anyway.

Actually Drew, although I don't always agree with Ron Paul, I respect his intellect and do sometimes agree with him. Rand is a different story, and a pale reflection of his father.

I sometimes agree with Ron Paul

In my opinion Ron Paul is good at taking complex issues and pretending like they are simple. That's his schtick and he is good at it. I'm not saying he isn't intelligent, and I actually support some of his ideas. Libertarians make a lot of sense during the first 10 minutes of conversation, but after that the crazy starts to set in.

Guide the conversation so you can get at their sane points before the legalizing crack and every man for himself economy talk starts.

Usually it's when they start talking about getting rid of the EPA and FDA that my eyes glaze over.

Go ahead, the Democrats will thank you. And you can get Rick Santorum for his VP and probably give them the biggest win in US history.

polar opposites. Indeed, Santorum has more in common with Hillary Clinton than Dr. Paul.

You are aware I was JOKING right? Santorum's treatment of Ron during the 2012 campaign would probably be enough to destroy that wedding! On the economy and foreign policy very far apart, yes, on size of government, still pretty far apart, on social issues, they are VERY SIMILAR!

You must be one of those new "Tea Party" wannabe Libertarian Republicans if you believe Rand Paul is a libertarian on social issues. His views on government involvement in abortion and the gay marriage amendment would make a true(Barry Goldwater, old school) Libertarian throw up! And they are exactly the same as Santorum. And those are just off the top of my head.

Wait a minute, are you really comparing one of our longest serving Senators, the founder of modern Conservatism, and the Patron Saint of the REAL LIBERTARIAN*(who believe in real personal liberty, not just what they agree with, and government control of liberties they don't agree with) party with his son, the guy who made a lackluster political career in House, thanks to daddy's name, who lost every election outside of his gerrymandered LA district, who is currently a huckster for a "Coin and Collectible" company of questionable quality and honesty? That's a joke right. He's another one of those "Tea Party" Republican wannabes. Yeah, if it wasn't for his daddy's name, who would care who Barry Jr. endorsed, as a matter fact, who does care?

Oh and by the way I feel the same way about Ron and Rand Paul. Although I don't always agree with Ron, I think that he is three times more intelligent, twice as honest, and ten times more capable than his son.

I would love Huntsman/Ryan in '16.

I hope these people run:
Huntsman Ryan Paul Carson Cruz Christie Walker
All will have something I'll want to hear on that stage.
I hope whoever wins the nomination will be prepared to be EXTREMELY unpopular, because to do what must be done for this country will not make friends.
