Serious question
Jun 13, 2012, 9:04 PM
|
|
I've not followed this like most of you, but from the reports that I've seen and the facts that we know right now, isn't staying in the ACC the best option for Clemson?
It seems the risk of excluding an ACC team from the chance to play in a NC game is low. I don't understand why this is the conclusion everyone is drawing. If exclusion is actually what happens (I cannot see this happening) then I'm certain that Clemson would take the necessary steps to remedy that, even if it means changing conferences.
Help here is appreciated. I just don't get why everyone is so worked up.

very possible to make a 4 team playoff with one loss. The thinking is we would have a higher SOS and potential to play higher ranked teams in the Big 12 than we would in the ACC. 6 of the last 10 national champions has had at least one loss.

passed over for any 1 loss team. Take a 2012 Clemson team for example, 13 wins, 2 SEC wins, and a conf championship. Undefeated gets un in every time.
A 1-loss ACC team will be considered after we (the ACC) starts to win bowl games on a consistent basis. Right now we don't have a good track record, but that will change.

The only way to chance this is for the ACC teams to win non-conference games, especially bowl games.

Why is it hard to schedule 2 quality OOC opponents with a nine game conference schedule?? Right now the ACC is relatively weak... it's not a meat grinder of a conference schedule... we have Sc at the end of the season and we schedule one good opponent at the beginning of the season.... we still have room for one gimme game..... I don't think that is overly demanding... when the ACC starts to get stronger we can try to roll back the quality of the opening opponent

jvtiger makes a comment.
You respond to that comment by asking "Did you go to college at Clemson?"
I respond with "How is that relevant?" The implied conclusion to that question is, "...to what we are talking about?"
You then ask "Relevant to what?"
The answer is the implied conclusion to my previous question.
Side note, you're a pretty good troll. 6.5/10.
And no, I don't deal.

Clemson and the rest of the ACC just need to win, then they will compete for the top dollars too. Am I wrong in the way I'm thinking about this?

going into the debate. I believe the facts are that any ACC school will have the change to compete. Also, I have not heard one argument that any part of Clemson's program will suffer for lack of money (its a given that our TV contract is not as good as others). Our coaching and facilities continue to improve.
Too much hate for the ACC on this board. I agree we need a new commissioner, but let's not throw away all of our history and tradition because some perceived issues and hatred for one man. The grass is not always greener on the other side.

Money pays coaches, money upgrades facillities, and money helps recruiting budgets. It also allows you to increase your staff, which Dabo has been wanting. Money is very important and the ACC will NEVER be on eqaul footing financially with the sec...no matter if it starts winning.

Clemson playing in the ACC even if it's only the 5th best football conference won't keep the Tigers out of a 4 team playoff. If Clemson had gone 13-0 last year the 4 teams would have been LSU, Alabama, Clemson, and Oklahoma State.

I think alot of you are still ignoring the possibilty that 4 conferences may eventually have their own playoff and just call it the national championship. They are not bound to the ncaa.

The big four would have to break off and form their own NCAA-esque entity.
I find this to be somewhere between likely and probable.

Definitely looks like a possibility. Rose bowl and new championship bowl look suspiciously like potential semifinals.

four sixteen team conferences.
If 64 schools are going to break away from the NCAA, Clemson will be invited to be among them. Only monumental administrational incompetence could cause us to be left out.
Even if the SEC didn't get to the point where it would invite us, once the Big XII moves to the BTN model (they'll all get there eventually, the money is too good), adding a school in South Carolina, especially one with Clemson's history and following, would be a no-brainer.

no offer from the Big 12. Once/if the offer comes, then that 1000 percent drops to 50/50 and probably even more towards Clemson leaving.
There's a reason the NCAA wanted control over TV/money. It's b/c they knew that this scenario was coming and they realized it would destroy college football as we've known it.
Once they lost in court, the decline started.
I'm not saying the new format will be good or bad. I am saying it is changing and that Clemson can:
a. react extremely slowly and suffer bad. b. react slowly, waiting for all the info, and end up negotiating for something from a position void of power or c. be proactive, stay ahead of the game, and negotiate from a position of power.

Are you truly going to argue that college football has

DECLINED since the OU/UGA trial?
Before that trial you got to see, what, three games a week if you were lucky? How lucrative is college football now vs. then? Is there a single shred of evidence to support your statement?
I agree with your three options.

Well, for starters, bowl season sucks. even the big games

not the BCS game. Next, you have conferences shifting, teams from Idaho playing in the Big East and teams from TX and MO in the SE. Then there's the ACC, in danger of becoming irrelevant.
College football is facing some serious issues.

ever, and is making more money than ever.
Yes, a lot of those bowl games do suck, no doubt about it. We get maybe two or three gems per year outside of the title game (which is also a dud often enough).
Conferences are shifting in order to make even more money, not because of some crisis. The ACC's looming irrelevance is entirely its own doing.

Yet all that money ruined the bowls. And there's potential

for the teams/conferences with power and money to take their ball and create their own little game/league. Like it or not, football, like the NFL, needs to have 1 strong leader leading a group with 1 common goal, the league.
Now their are multiple strong leaders (conferences) taking their minions in their own directions chasing their own goals and what we'll be left with will be something that ABC/ESPN set up as their main advertising machine.
The Verizon/Ford/Cisco Systems Collegiate Football League Championship sponsored by Stihl and KFC (for thurs/fri games).

Have to agree. Even though the changing landscape has been beneficial so far to my team, i cant help but think i will one day look back to the good old days of 12 team conferences, with traditional rivalries, and geographic sense. Alot of history is going to be lost over the next few years.

Agree. If clemson is left out in the next round of expansion it may hurt but only in the short term. No reason to panic until its time fir everyone to go to 16. There are not 64 football programs with more to offer than clemson.

If everyone goes to 16, then Clemson is in. SEC might not take them due to footprint and the Big 10 isn't going to take anyone that isn't an AAU univeristy. The Big 12 will take them if they go to 16. No doubt.
I think it was USA Today that reported AD budgets.....USC was $20 million above Clemson. It isn't just a few million dollars. It is $20 million and that was based on 2010 I believe.
TV money is part of it, but the YES program, larger Gamecock club, extra 3000 people per baseball game, and so on add up.

due to your larger alumni base. Your school sucked (no offense, just facts) for years because you didn't make a commitment to winning. Now the situation is reversed and it is Clemson which is reticent to make that commitment.

Major $$$ and fear of being left out of NC hopes seems to be the driving factors. I agree with your post. For a team until last year that routinely has gone 5-3 in the ACC, we all seem to be a little delusional. I went to Miami 1982 and would love to go to a NC game again. I say support the trustees, the coaches, the players...win enough games first and the rest will take care of its self. If the $$$ difference proves to be a deciding factor in allowing us equal success with the SEC and other power conferences, then I might reconsider. If $$$ was the primary component of success, then why is Notre Dame a fraction of what they used to be?

of the top reasons for sure. B/c its not the only reason doesn't relegate it to non-factor status.
And its hard enough to keep up these days. If we wait too long, we'll be trying to "catch up." I don't want to wait to have to catch up.
