Reality check: college baseball doesn't matter much.
Jun 2, 2015, 8:33 PM
|

It does not generate a profit. In fact, it loses a significant amount of money each year. In terms of importance at Clemson, it is a distant third behind football and basketball. That's not to say that we shouldn't care about its success, or debate Leggett's future. But some people here act like this is a huge deal and worth stressing about. In the grand scheme of life, college sports, and even Clemson sports, baseball isn't worth all of this vitriol.

No joking, Clemson baseball has been very important since I can remember and obviously I'm 31. Personally to me it's equal to basketball.

From a financial standpoint it is a country mile in 4th place behind Women's Basketball. Not speaking about my interest level. It's just a fact.

Only one program consistently makes money off baseball
Jun 2, 2015, 8:58 PM

That's LSU. They bring in an average of around $2 million a year from baseball. The average Division 1-A/Power Five school loses over $600,000 a year, which is the biggest average loss of any sport - by a significant margin.

Perspective on importance of baseball...
Jun 2, 2015, 9:29 PM
|
|
Baseball loses about a million per year while basketball makes about four million. Basketball also has double the capacity and far more than double the TV viewership. It plays a much bigger role in Clemson's branding and the ACC's media contracts.
Baseball is a clear third.
THAT SAID, we are investing a lot of money in facilities so they obviously are willing to sink money into it to win. Maybe that's not wise, but if they're going to do that, might as well spend the extra 200k and actually get a coach that will win.
Get me liberty or give me Monte Lee!

Most of the money they're spending are private donations brought in by Jack Leggett.

I also said that it's great to discuss. But I'm so sick of the back-and-forth on this topic the last few weeks, with people on both "sides" getting angry when others don't agree with them. I am offering a little perspective, which is the fact that baseball doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of college athletics or Clemson University.

usually are vocally passionate.
None of us like to see Clemson's teams falter, and since most consider football, basketball and baseball to be the big three, there's going to be a great deal of hoopla raised about those programs.
Perhaps, it's my "advanced" age, senility, stupidity and/or idiocy, but I rather enjoy the oft-rabid discussions on TNet about our programs. I, also, am amazed with the number of posters who are rather familiar with our staffs, teams and the games. Thus, I don't get particularly upset with the threads.

Matters just as much as football
Jun 3, 2015, 11:35 AM

It is an opportunity for kids with athletic skills to receive an education they probably would not be academically edible for. It is an extracurricular activity for students.
That is the purpose of athletic scholarships no matter how much money is made or lost.

So not being good means that football has to subsidize baseball.
