I remember always thinking, when I was younger, how can this guy be the leading home run hitter of all time in baseball history? It still doesn't compute.

how many of his homers came late in games. Back then, if you were a pitcher, you were expected to pitch the whole game, for the most part. He might have timed them up the fourth, fifth or sixth time around.
