New Story: Dear David Hood & TNet News. From Todd McShay: here's what I see...

First off David, thank you for the kind words & compliments. Being an NFL draft analyst is kind of like being a local weather man. I just get my info from the internet, put my own twist on it, spread the word and hope for the best. But ultimately it's up to the climate and atmosphere that determine the outcome. Like a Patriots QB or a driver for Hendrick's Motor Sports. Sometimes it's the system & anyone can step in and do pretty well. Hello Dak Prescott.... Guess we'll see if that happens for the next Clemson QB in their "system." That being said, I agree with everything you said in regards to Watson. He's a proven winner with the it factor, and has been his whole life. He has the determination to be great, if he continues to study & developed properly. But here are a few thoughts and concers if trying to start him right away. First, he'll be playing with all men. Nothing against the early developers. Heck I played middle school ball with guys with full beards. He won't have a team with superior talent, and inferior competition. It will be like playing Alabama every week, and he'll need to be able to do several things better. Starting with looking off defenders. He threw several picks this year, directly to the DB's that had studied his habits and tendencies. He has to see the open #1 guy or go throw his progressions quicker. This will take him a little time, because the speed of the game is much quicker at the next level. Also, When giving him a draft grade, I'm comparing him to guys like Andrew Luck and Payton Manning, not just QB's from this years draft. That doesn't mean a team who's in need of a QB won't take him early in first round; which is where I think he'll go. After all, the QB is the biggest difference maker on the football field. And if you're going to build around a position, that's the one. People view a top notch QB similar to drafting a RB from Alabama. It can be hit or miss. When you play behind one of the the best O-linea in college football, against inferior talent, you should stand out. But as we've also seen, that doesn't always translate to the NFL with equal size & competition. This is what scares NFL teams with Watson. He plays behind an all American front line, and has all American receivers to throw to. Even Tajh Boyd looked good in the Clemson system. But he was throwing to Watkins, Hopkins & Bryant...hello! He completes a high percentage of passes 25yds or less, but very low percentage over 25yds. Meaning, he usually wasn't throwing to a target deep, but merely throwing it up & letting his receivers try to go get it. He'll need to be able to "take the top" off the defense with accuracy. That will have to change, or he'll wind up like Alex Smith, a decent QB in his own right, but isn't going to take you to the Super Bowl. I would suggest a team like the AZ Cards or Steelers take Watson, let him develop a year or two behind a veteran, and cut him lose. I see very bright things is Watson's future and glad I'll be here to watch it happen. Go Tigers! Sincerely, Todd McShay ??

Except...that's not what McShitt really thinks. All last year

he claimed Watson was a fourth or fifth round talent. He only has him 2nd on his board because that's were he thinks he will go, not where he thinks Watson deserves to go.
McShitt is no more qualified to analyze football talent than I am. How he gets paid to do what he does is beyond me!

And that crap will go over much better on FGF.
I don't give a rodent's hind parts what challenge you put in front of DW--he'll face it with determination, poise, confidence and humility. He will not succomb. And THAT, you feathered water fowl, is what a champion is made of. But I wouldn't expect the likes of you to get that.

Go actually read what was written..... No Coot here! And you're a complete idiot if you think Watson is perfect as is. If you can't see any flaws, how would he get better? Do you think he's already at his peak?? DW4 would tell you the same thing. There are things he needs to work on to make that transition. College football in a spread offense, in shotgun is different than playing in the NFL. Actually read before making an idiotic statement...

Todd McShay, that DW has demonstrated the very quality that will drive him to a high level of success in the NFL?

David, really? It was made to be a fun response to the letter to Todd McShay. Are you really that dense? So, you didn't think I was being sarcastic....humorous....and a little insightful? I mean I compared an NFL draft analyst to a local meteorologists. Get a sense of humor & don't take life so serious. See the light brother! We still live in America and are pretty free!

David, so you're saying Watson will start next season & take his team to the playoffs? I hope so, but it's a very long shot. But, go back and look at some research and see how many QB's that have come out in their JR year lead a team to a winning record starting in the NFL... I agree he has all the potential to be a star, but to put that kind of pressure on him would be silly. He self admittedly got rattled to begin this season because of the pressure.

And I wholeheartedly disagree with your "assessment" of his inability to throw the long ball. That is a piece of idiocy, Skippy.

If you disagree that Watson needs to improve his deep ball, then you didn't watch Clemson football this year. He struggled for most of the season completing deep passes. After the Pitt game, he started to find his groove until the break before the college football playoffs. He overthrew way too many deep passes last year.
Luckily there's a lot more to being a qb other than throwing deep passes, and that's one of the only things you can nitpick with DW4.

Nobody throws the deep ball for a high completion percentage. DW does it as well as anyone. Will he have to take another step forward in the pros? Of course. Will he? Of course! He's DW4. And any team that needs a QB and passes on him has missed the boat.

You're kinda making yourself look stupid in this thread. Of coarse the deep ball is not going to be completed as much as shorter passes. If you couldn't see DW had problems with the deep ball then you're just a blind homer. Compared to his sophomore and freshman years, he was much worse last year. He was 0 for the season until the second quarter of the 5th game, and it's not like we didn't throw them. I do agree with you in that he will definitely improve.

That would be fine because I didn't say he didn't complete any. I could also post a lot of gifs of overthrows. His throws over 40 yards were terribly inconsistent this year, and I don't know what you were watching if you didn't see that.

I still maintain that DW has every throw in his arsenal. More importantly, he has the intangibles you want. So if a team needs a QB and they pass on him, they've missed the boat. Now call me stupid again. You're as much a peach as the OP

Haha. The fact that you couldn't figure out that the op made that post in jest, and telling me that deep balls aren't completed as much as short passes is what made you look stupid.
I never said DW didn't have every throw in his arsenal either, I said he really struggled with the deep ball this year. I agree that passing on DW would be a franchise changing decision.

Excellent analysis. Watson is head and shoulders above where most QBs are out of college, but he has things to work on as well (as do they all!). If he sits and marinates for a year or two behind a guy like Eli, Big Ben, or another veteran winner on a quality team, he will be primed for greatness at the next level!!

Don't let the noobs and coot trolls bother you. Most vets on here are very football knowledgeable and can see the game and players through non-orange tinted glasses.

New Story: Dear David Hood & TNet News

Hi.
My name is Todd McShay. You might be familiar with my work. I am part of the on air talent pool at ESPN. One of my responsibilities is to provide NFL draft stock opinions as ESPN slowly puts Mel out to pasture.
Like Mel's, my opinions carry no weight or relevance inside NFL circles. However, the slack jawed public keeps watching and tweeting about me.
As a result of the eyeballs and tweets, I am - in a phrase - "getting paid, b¹tches!"
And for that I thank you and your readership. Let's do lunch when you are up next time in Bristol.
Todd

Okay you got me, our O line sucks. ??Sorry Hyatt, you aren't that good. I never, nor do I think Gallman was a natural or great RB. He runs hard with heart. He did learn & get better vision though. If you remember Choice passed him on the depth chart before he got hurt. You will see our stable of RB's stand out his year...
