Is Kirby pulling a Tommy Bowden on Georgia? I think that has to be what is

going on with these rumors about him possibly coaching the lowly Atlanta Falcons. Feign some interest, and watch Georgia fork over a few hundred thousand more per year. Just like Tommy Bowden did Clemson, using Arkansas as his foil.
I mean, all he has to do is look at history. His mentor, Nick Saban, quickly figured out the NFL wasn't for him. Lou Holtz, Steve Spurrier, Chip Kelly, Urban Meyer all failed MISERABLY on the NFL stage, and had to come back to college to achieve further success. (Meyer mucked it up so badly, he may never GET another college gig.)
Only a couple success stories come to mind. Jim Harbaugh with the 49ers, although he never won the Super Bowl, and Pete Carroll with the Seahawks, who actually HAS won the Ultimate Prize in the NFL.
IF I could offer Kirby Smart any good advice it would be to stay at Georgia, and build his guys a closed driving course. Stay away, FAR away from the Atlanta Falcons and the NFL.

Ha. A few hundred thousand more? He is already making close to 11 million with increases to 12.5 by 2031. Doubt that number even includes bonuses he could earn.

You skipped a few others that had success. Jimmy Johnson won 2 Super Bowls, Barry Switzer won one. Ron Rivera took Carolina to a Super Bowl and came close to winning it.
I don't think money alone would be enough to get Kirby to the NFL, he's making more than most NFL coaches already and he would have less say in player selection. I think he only goes in the right circumstances, and to a team poised to win now.
Until I see something more than rumors I wouldn't put much stock in his moving on, he's got a good thing going at Ga and he knows it. Most coaches that move up leave behind a mess of a program and want out.

Except Ron Rivera wasn't a HC in college...

Maybe. These top tier guys are wired differently than us. In a lot of cases these guys are making more money in college than they would on the sideline in the NFL. The reason most of them jump isn't the money. They want to prove they can do it at the NFL level.
I don't think Kirby's model translates well up there. Don't get me wrong. He's a good coach. His superpower, as most college coaches, is recruiting. Tilting the talent scale heavily in your favor was when he really took off a UGA. Anybody remember when the Dawgs were losing to Scar? It is nearly impossible to out talent other NFL teams to the degree that UGA does against most of their competition.
If he makes that jump, I think he does it b/c he wants to prove he is a great coach and not just a elite recruiter. No idea if that's how he's wired but that's my take.

Several problems with this ridiculous rumor.

First, the Falcons don’t have a coaching vacancy.
Second, Kirby has a great gig and has no reason to leave Georgia.
Third, the Falcons are only going to replace Arthur Smith with someone who is a proven NFL coach. Arthur Blank is old and wants to win a Spuet Bowl.

Falcons fan here. There is a guy holding the position but it IS absolutely vacant. Nothing of any value at all coming out of Arthur Smith. I'd appreciate it if he'd head back to papa's warehouse and get one of those cushy 3rd shift security guard spots.

Arthur Smith should be fired, but he hasn’t been yet.
Surely Arthur Blank wouldn’t hire Kirby Smart, but it would be a very Falcon-y thing to do.

I wouldn't fault a college coach for bolting to an NFL job in the current CFB

environment.
A lot less headaches. You don't have to manage your roster from month to month and you don't have to recruit and re-recruit. You don't have to do the rubber chicken circuit as often and you know who the actual boss is. Honestly, the head coach in CFB is less of a coach and more of a GM as it is right now.
If he wants to actually coach, the NFL makes more sense.

Don't blame the coach, blame the agent. They are the one's who work to get the best possible deal for their client at any expense.
But why pay a coach $11mm when you can pay players through NIL. I believe only a small portion of a coach's salary comes from the university with the rest coming from some kind of structured booster program. Eventually the boosters will direct their funds to the players instead of the coach.

the Falcons would hire a head coach with no NFL experience, that's assuming the current head coach is fired.
The Falcons are more likely to make a run at Khaki Pants at Michigan rather than Kirby.

As a "born into the life" Falcons fan, I'd gouge out my eyeballs if Harbaugh ends up in Atlanta. Please. No.
