If my son is offered a full scholly to Stanford...

I would make him think long and hard about going there over Clemson.
A Stanford degree opens up doors that a Clemson degree doesn't...much less a SCar degree.

What's your example?
Obviously college is what you make it, but a Stanford degree opens up a lot of post graduate opportunities and business opportunities on a national level.

I'm guessing he means that you most likely would rather have a horticulture degree (or anything in the Ag department) from Clemson as opposed to Stanford. Maybe engineering as well. I'm not familiar with Stanford's engineering program.

Stanford is #2 to MIT.
Clemson's engineering gets poor ratings nationally for some reason. No idea why.
GT is 8th and NC St is like #24

Fair enough. The Ag department probably still holds up to Stanford though I hope.

It used to be we ranked below Ga Tech due to Grad programs, but undergrad was ranked higher. Not sure about current rankings.

Academic scholarships are almost non-existent at schools like Stanford. Cost of attendance is a sliding scale based on family income.

Every Stanford student from a family with an income below $65,000 pays no tuition, fees, room, or board at all.
For families below $125,000 tuition is fully waived (but not fees, room, and board).

Not really true.
The test isn't just income. There is also a test for savings.
If your family income is $65k and you have no savings, then it's true.
If you make $125k and have no savings, why?

Friends son is there. Genius type, speaks 5 languages. Has never even come close to making a B. Finished HS with 104+ average. Accepted everywhere except MIT. No scholarship. It’s strictly based on need. If you have the money you pay.

to California. Clemson's a nice school. Got two degrees from there. But it doesn't hold a candle to Stanford academically. They CURRENTLY have a dozen nobel prize laureates on faculty.

Stanford is an amazing university, but this is what I've
Oct 15, 2018, 1:06 PM

learned watching my 16yo daughter grow up:
We are all different and going for the best isn't always what's right. Somewhere in there, happiness has to be accounted for. Stanford's academics are superior to Clemson, but can my kid get what she needs from Clemson while not carrying the same stress level that may come from Stanford.
Som are driven to take the hardest challenge, some are happy to do well but not compete against the best. There's no blanket wrong or right.
If we are strictly talking academics, Stanford is the choice, but Clemson students continue to place their university as one of the happiest in the country.

Of course, but its subjective. We can equate colleges with

jobs with the best academic institutions being comparable to the best paying jobs. So I can choose to go to Stanford like I can choose to be a neurosurgeon, corporate lawyer, or CEO. I can also decide thats not the life I want and choose to work as a firefighter, teacher, or nurse. In the forst set of jobs, I'm way more "succesful" but it doesn't mean it leaves time for my family and hobbies, hence I'm not as happy. Choosing colleges is the same. Being a firefighter or RN has its own set of skills that require less time and dedication, therefore pay, but I have more time to be balanced and happy in life. Which one's best? I know what I chose..

I live in Palo Alto - over at Stanford all the time
Oct 15, 2018, 1:32 PM
|
|
My girlfriend runs a research lab for the chair of one of the departments at Stanford Medical.
It is a ridiculously awesome university by any measure. The academics are among the top in the world. The university has got an incredible amount of cash - the building on campus and off just goes on and on. The buildings themselves are also incredible.
Someone asked about engineering - let's see, the buildings I walk past are named for (meaning they made huge donations and often continue to do so) Jen-Hsung Huang, the founder of Nvidia, Paul Allen (co-founder of Microsoft), Bill Gates, William Hewlett Building and a David Packard Building (they had a start-up in Palo Alto, maybe you've heard of it - Hewlett Packard). Then there is the money from Silicon Valley VCs.
The recruit in question I understand is interested in pre-med. Comparing USuC School of Medicine to Stanford is like comparing Byrnes HS football facilities to Clemson.
Finally let me point out something that I think some of you miss. College is not just education and job placement. A huge part of it is the network you establish and which the university sustains. That network of students and faculty at Stanford you become part of gives you a life-long advantage as you pursue your career.
And then a PS - the weather in Palo Alto is just perfect nearly all the time. The outdoor activity opportunities are awesome, and the surrounding area from nearby hiking up on Skyline Drive, to a cold beer and seafood at Sam's Chowder House in Half Moon Bay, a half-hour drive to San Francisco, an hour to Santa Cruz and then beyond to Monterey and Big Sur. Or a weekend at Lake Tahoe or hiking in the Sierras.
So yeah, if he visits Stanford and chooses USuC - well there must be something else at work is all I'll say.

A lot of solid research has shown that students that were accepted into "ivy league" schools but attended lower level schools show no statistical difference in career earnings. This applies if they graduate from a school regarded in the roughly top 150 of all universities(Clemson is easily top 100 by most any measure). When they graduate from a school outside the top 150, there is some gradual drop off in earnings.
Basically, if you are making Standford level grades and SAT scores in high school, you will make Stanford level money even if you decide to go to a solid State U. Let him go where he wants to.

The day after Clemson beat the Irish
Oct 15, 2018, 7:43 PM
|
|
In '15, I spoke with a local high school recruit who had been to the game. He had a blast, loved the environment, the noise...and the program. I was tickled...then I asked who else he had an offer and a planned official visit to....Stanford. I looked at him and his mom and said, "Enjoy Palo Alto!"
I love Clemson...but some schools open doors....it's just the way it is. He's at Stanford now...redshirt Freshman safety. Couldn't pull for him, though...my son and (way too much) money went to Oregon! Clemson fans would LOVE Autzen, by the way.

My cousin got a Masters in Computer Science back about 89-90. Worked 7 years at Microsoft writing software, when his project Access 97 launched he cashed out and has been retired since. Lives near Aiken now but has a large home in Vermont as well.
He was accepted to MIT and Stanford but chose the Palo Alto school because it was warmer than Boston.

I grew up poor in rural South Carolina. Never will find a bigger Clemson football fan than me. But when the choice came between MIT and Clemson, even this dumb country boy knew to go to Cambridge, MA. Sure I missed more than a few holidays and family events, but the educational, professional and financial opportunities available are just not comparable. MIT connections led to opportunities in three countries (and Miami) and I am no longer poor.
Could I have been successful at Clemson, I surely hope so. Might have been happier. Might have even gotten better opportunities. But the safe play was the number one engineering school in the middle of the High tech VC wealth surrounded by Nobel laureates and big corporate investments.
