How much has basketball changed in the last decade

It used to be anything more than one step was traveling, flopping is now called charging and when was the last time you saw a palming call for carrying the basketball. The three second rule has disappeared, you can hack at someone and no foul but don’t extend your arm while on defense and touch a players hip. Don’t know if it is better or worse but it is different!

Agree, the old school is closed and I blame the NBA and it's no rule game. The game that I played and worked in during the late 60's and early 70's has just changed. Better or worse is a personal question but for me the great skills of today's players is sometime overshadowed by the rule changes for this old timer.

Thing is, the rules haven't changed, they are just ignored

by sorry-ass refs who are totally incompetent or are on the take, not sure which, but they sure as heck don't enforce the rules.

Agree 100 % I watched I guy take 4 steps in an NBA game then slam dunk the ball. I have seen traveling called in an NBA game twice this year.
It’s sure not the game I grew up playing. Maybe if some of these guys referred to as great athletes with great skills might not be as great if they called traveling a lot more.

allowing the rim to become a chin-up bar! Anytime a player grabs the rim and pulls his knees up to his chest, should be a technical foul!

I also remember when a player fouled someone, he raised his hand to admit the foul and let the scorer get his number. Now they act like they have been wrongly accused of murder, argue with the ref and look to the big-screen to prove they did nothing wrong. On the other hand, I think half of the fouls called are arbitrary at best.

Palming was made a point of emphasis awhile ago and was actually called a lot. I think it actually reduced the occurrence. But they do seem to have adapted NBA traveling rules - which basically is that there is no traveling if the play ends at the basket.

Flopping has been pretty steady for 30 years or more already. Duke perfected it.

It strikes home that even when you go back a decade we were exactly where we are now as a basketball program.

Coach K and Shane Battier took flopping to another level. Allen Iverson legalized palming. (It was marketable.)

It's been several decades...but I hate the flop charge. Where the defender holds his nuts and falls down.
There should be charges for discards with the off hand, hooks, lowering the shoulder and other things...but if a defender puts his hands on his nuts, that should be an instant defensive foul.

I think the biggest change is the open style of play, with the team spreading the court for dribble penetration and/or kicking it out for 3s.
The days of working it in the paint with two bigs is over.
Otherwise, like football, the transfer portal and NIL will make college more like the pros with open payments of players, who move from team to team.

the ball away from the basket and see how many times they will move BOTH feet before they put the ball on the ground. The PIVOT foot no longer exists for many refs. AND THEY DOUBLE DRIBBLE ALL THE TIME. I saw a player in our game last night dribble and then go to pick it up with both hands but the all went back to the floor immediately and so he just kept on dribbling. I see players lose the ball in mid air and jump and catch it..I'm sorry, but that is up and down. You cannot make a pass to yourself. I also saw a clear goal tending that was not called yesterday. The ball went in anyway, but it WAS GOAL TENDING. And the play where PJ went to the basket, got fouled and lost the ball in midair, but regained it and laid it in.....well sir, that was CONTINUATION if I have ever seen it. Should have been a three point play....But, the ref disavowed the shot and had him shoot TWO. IF IT WAS A SHOOTING FOUL....HE MADE THE SHOT!!

There used to be a difference in “organized ball” and “street ball”. Now it’s all street ball.
