They say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Maybe that explains Tee Higgins’ toughness!
Before Clemson:
To say that Tee Higgins went through some difficult times in his childhood would be an understatement. According to the Players’ Tribune, he was in kindergarten when the following occurred:
“I remember walking from the cafeteria back to the classroom with all my friends and my teacher, and then her getting a call that someone had come to take me home. When I heard that, it was pure celebration.
Yeah!! HAHAAHAHA! I’m outta here. Later for you guys!!!

I remember my sister walked me out to the car, and after she put me in, she finally told me why she was crying so hard. She turned to me, and looked me in the eyes, and just came out with it.
“It’s Momma.”
Then she stopped for a second.
“What happened to Momma?” I yelled. “What happened to Momma?!”
“Momma got shot,” KeKe said, and she told me that the man our mom was dating had pulled the trigger. “Momma’s hurt real bad.”
And right then, that’s when I said it.
That’s when those four words somehow came out of the mouth of six-year-old Tamaurice Higgins. In between sobs, I screamed out….
“I’m gonna kill him!!!!!!”

When we pulled up to the house, it seemed like there were 100 police officers out front, but I remember the yellow tape more than anything.
...
I opened the car door and ran over to the police officers as fast as I could.
“Where’s my momma?!?!?”
I was screaming my words at that point, and it was tough to catch my breath.
“I wanna see my momma! Where is she? Where’s my momma?”
She was already gone, they told me. A helicopter had somehow flown over to our little street in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and picked up my mom to take her to the hospital.
And for a little kid … that might have been the worst news of all.
Hearing that I wouldn’t be able to see my mom, or hug her, or tell her how much I loved her … that really just set me off into a whole different place.
I literally cried the next four days straight.

What young Tee did not yet know was that his mom was involved in drug use. Getting through such a tough ordeal had to be beyond difficult.
That said, the family did get through this extremely challenging time. And, I have to believe their tremendous perseverance and resilience had to make this family stronger.
While at Clemson:
Tee Higgins was nothing short of exceptional at Clemson! Exceptional! According to excerpts from his ClemonTigers.com bio:
Talented wideout who produced one of the school’s most impressive sophomore campaigns in 2018 in his first full year as a starter and followed up with a spectacular junior campaign to place himself among the top receivers in Clemson’s illustrious lineage at the position … finished his three-year career from 2017-19 with 135 career receptions for 2,448 yards with 27 receiving touchdowns over 1,279 snaps in 43 games (30 starts) … his 27 career receiving touchdowns tied for the most in school history with DeAndre Hopkins and Sammy Watkins and tied for ninth-most in ACC history … selected as a second-team Preseason All-American for 2019 by both Phil Steele and Athlon … departed as the only player in school history to record double-digit touchdown receptions in consecutive seasons.
2019: First-team All-ACC selection and second-team USA Today All-American… recorded 59 catches for a team-high 1,167 yards (fifth-most in a season in school history) and 13 receiving touchdowns in 550 snaps over 15 games (all starts)

2017: Had 17 receptions for 345 yards and two touchdowns in 179 snaps over 13 games … averaged 20.3 yards per reception

While playing, it was his mom’s voice that came through during the games. According to the Greenville News:
Higgins is an All-American wide receiver whose stunning catches draw deafening roars from Clemson fans. But no one screams louder for Higgins than Stewart.
"The Georgia Tech game, I was on the sideline. Defense was on the field,” Higgins said, recalling Clemson’s home opener. Even while the fans rooted on the defense, Higgins could hear Stewart’s call.
“'Teeeeee!'” Higgins mimicked with a smile. “It's just good to see. I want to have that type of support for my child. It's just great having that type of mother, who will come see you play anywhere and everywhere.”

After Clemson:
The Cincinnati Bengals selected Tee Higgins with the 33rd Pick (1st Pick of the 2nd Round) in the 2020 NFL Draft. According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, Higgins compiled the following stats between 2020-2023 with the Bengals:

- 58 Games
- 257 Receptions for 3,684 Yards
- 24 Receiving Touchdowns
- 5 Carries for 28 Yards

In my opinion, Tee was the last great receiver we've had at Clemson. I hope to see another batch of great receivers starting this year.
A couple of great receivers can turn a good QB into a great QB.

South Carolina Highway 135 is a 20.92 mile state highway that starts on the southwest end at US 178 near liberty, travels through Easley crossing US 123, and continues to the northeast end at SC 8 near Pumpkintown.
 
A thread last week discussed Pat Conroy, author of The Prince of Tides and The Lords of Discipline. He attended The Citadel, a public military college in Charleston, SC. It was established in 1842 as the South Carolina Military Academy with 2 campuses - the Citadel Academy in Charleston and the Arsenal Academy in Columbia. The Arsenal Academy was burned down by General Sherman in the Civil War and never reopened. The Citadel Academy later moved across town and became The Citadel in 1910. About 3,700 cadets and 1,300 graduate students and non-cadets are enrolled in 38 degree programs on a 300 acre campus. The athletic teams, the Bulldogs, compete in NCAA Division I in the Southern Conference. Notable cadets besides Conroy include Charles Daniel, Tandy Rice, Stump Mitchell, and General William Westmoreland.
