Can some of you experts help me out? It’s my understanding that the cost to leave the conference is approximately $120 million. That’s unmanageable for sure. BUT, it’s also my understanding that if the make up of the conference changes, (ie. a new team is added or a team leaves) the existing agreement becomes null and void. If that’s true, Clemson and FSU Presidents need to come together and agree to split the $120 mil and go join the B1G or the SEC. There should no penalty for the second team to leave. And given the additional revenue from a new conference, we’d both be miles ahead within 24 months. What am I missing here? Go Tigers!

I doubt one team leaving the conference or another joining voids things? Do you have more info about that?

$120mil is manageable if you are guaranteed a spot

In SEC or Big- however that $120mil figure FSU is saying is grossly understated IMO based on what I’ve read on GOR. It’s exit fee + the rights are gone until 2036 so essentially exit fee + 0 tv rev for that period. None of the other conferences are going to let you join without having the TV rights so your only option is settling with the ACC on a figure that starts at close to 1/2 a billion. Say you get them to settle on half that - ~$250 million - you’re probably better off waiting at that point. There is a reason OU and Texas waited as long as they could.

I seriously doubt that you could get 3 individual institutes

of higher learning to enter into a contract to split the buyout fee. All AD's, Presidents, and Board of Trustees would have to agree on it, and while not raising the suspicion of the ACC and other schools on Tobacco Road. The politicking would be fierce in all directions. All it would take would be a president to decide not to go forward and it crashes like a house of cards.
I just don't see it happening in today's world.
I can see ESPN asking for a modification that might prompt it. ESPN would be drooling over that change for a super conference to form.

I think that $120 mil from the FSU legal counsel is very misleading. That can’t possibly include the loss of tv revenue for a decade plus. Perhaps the context was assuming the university was able to win a legal dispute to get out of the GoR. Maybe a trustee asked what would it cost if FSU won the legal battle?

If the ACC cannot support it’s members so they can compete with the BIG and SEC, then why don’t a majority of the schools vote to disband the ACC?

Probably because the majority of the schools are hangerons who have no other options than the ACC

The weaker programs should stay put and be happy. Their goal is an ACC Title, nothing nationally. ECU, App State, etc. can take our place(s).

Speculation only, but it's likely that a majority of the SEC schools would take FSU and Clemson in a heartbeat if the ACC GOR gets nullified or a payoff us negotiated.
The SEC may also look at UNC and either Miami or VA Tech as well.
The BIG 10 wants Notre Dame, but with the 12-team playoff looking, they'll likely stay independent in football.
The two wild cards here are actually far from Clemson. The BIG 10 may pick up Oregon and Washington. Less likely, hyt possible are that they get Stanford and Cal, too.
The Big 12 is considering poaching the Arizona schools, Utah, and Colorado from the PAC 12. That would make refugees out of Oregon St. Aland Wazzou, and finish off the PAC.
If the SEC, BIG, and Big 12 end up as super conferences, the ACC can't compete in it's present firm and with the outdated GOR.
SC, Gorusa, and Georgia don't want Clemson and FSU in the SEC.
Those obstacles can be overcome.
The SEC has 3 current in-state rivalries in their conference. The Alabama schools, the Mississippi schools, and Tennessee-Vandy.
They'll soon have Texas-TAMU as well.
The ACC needs to either add some big time name schools or renegotiate the GOR or it will go the way of the Big East. Even adding Notre Dame in football probably won't save it at this point.

As much as I hate to admit it, North Carolina would be the most attractive school to the SEC.

lots of good conversation to contemplate. Clemson and FSU are certainly in the same boat. Of the many comments, a few things stuck in my mind.
1. Whether the ACC or Clemson/FSU look to fight the income disparities with ESPN, we are going into a "gunfight with rocks." 2. Vandy and Indiana getting tens of millions more simply due to a conference affiliation formed decades ago. 3. UNC press whining at the FSU basketball game that they have to go back and cover football spring practice. They can do both and get paid. A different mindset, yet some see UNC as an expansion target.
Many more, but not something I can worry about since I have zero control. I have to decide whether to sign up for Medicare B by the end of the year.

I keep looking for a way out too, but things like this conversation don't help. From the video, all that can happen now is the other ACC schools agree to give teams (Clemson) that play in major bowls and the playoffs more to keep from their appearance and success. A possible solution mentioned by some is getting ESPN to agree to a new contract. But it is pointed out their parent company is cutting back due to losses in revenue and that's not likely.
