Seems like somewhere you could ride a golf cart with a dog and a cup full of whiskey would have been more comfortable, but hey..whatever floats your boat. Its always good when people can do what they want to do.

BUT, if I had the means, I'd retire to the mountains. Heck, Highlands, NC is basically a retirement community.

for the ultra wealthy. We went through there the other day and there were very few domestic cars except Caddilacs. Most were Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes. I did see one Ferrari and a handful of Porsches as well.

But it is a retirement community as well. Northerners retire in the south where the weather is better, and prices/taxes/everything is cheaper. They leverage the buying power of their retirement savings by moving south. I'm sure I've told the story of the "retired" Pittsburgh union steel worker who at 52yo retired, moved to SC, and bought a 400K house, one of the biggest in the neighborhood. He could live like a king down here on his pension and savings, and he did.
Later cheated on his wife, they divorced, and the house was sold. Don't know what ever happened to him. But that happens all the time. It's happening in Charleston. You see it in the real estate prices. Northerners leveraging their dollars. Then the real estate prices climb, as do the costs of other things, then the taxes increase to collect more money, and pretty soon Charleston isn't Charleston anymore. The takeover is fairly complete in Mt. Pleasant though. Hilton Head, same thing. Highlands, NC. All the same. "Wealthy" is all relative.

Plus trading 900 sqft with an incredible view for 3,300 sqft with an incredible view. Also, the summer weather is better at 4,500 ft above sea level than 30.
