Are baseball players getting to be more and more showboats?
Jun 6, 2022, 10:51 PM

I have noticed it in the MLB in recent years and in the little bit of college baseball I have seen there is more and more taunting, posing, etc. I may be wrong but I think a guy for Tennessee flipped off the Georgia Tech outfield after hitting a double last night. WTH?
Sign of the times? -- U.S. in 2022?

There have been many homeruns that have been hit this season, whether they be in the regular season or postseason that have had some showboating and taunting going on afterwards as the batter starts his trot to first base

It's absolutely sickening. That along with all the arm and junk trunk beepers, every batter has to check their gloves, adjust the hats on a pitch they wiffed at or left the bat on their shoulder.
Outfielders not catching with 2 hands. Made me sick watching our guys do the hammer thing on doubles. Now every team has a gimmick... Even if it's not relevant to the score. Act like you've been there. Hey, I'd understand if it was a CWS game because you're amped up. Wish more umps would call outs on that behavior... But even umps get drama queen syndrome.

Nothing wrong with it IMO

Let the people who play the game enjoy it however they want. And if the other team doesn’t like it, they can do something to prevent it.
Baseball in particular has a huge problem on their hands at engaging younger viewers. This adds excitement to the game that makes it fun. Long gone are the old days, and perhaps that is ok.

Respectfully disagree. I personally don't like it but with all the antics, something has to change. Hard enough to get younguns to engage for 2 hours... Let alone 4+
Electronic home umpire and a 15 second clock between each pitch.

They mimic what pro players do. It starts in grade school I'm afraid.

Since you asked the question . . .

Here’s my 2 cents . . .
It’s no different than the “Superman Reveal” or “Archer’s Arrow” in football . . . the “knee slides” in soccer . . . the “fingered three in your face” in basketball . . .
Baseball use to be the only sport that publicly policed its own . . . When pitchers had to hit, even they were subject to correction . . . and if you need me to tell you how that was done, you are too young to understand how the game use to be played and honored.
Has baseball gotten worse? . . . Yes, but it’s just catching up with the others.
Part of playing a Sport was once to know its inherent attributes of honesty, integrity, diligence, perseverance and loyalty. Sports, sadly, have degraded their ethics and have solely become a means to entertain and earn a living. This is the “change” we are seeing.
Do I still love the games I watch? More than many will ever know, but I also miss the lessons these Sports once taught those that applauded their efforts.
Rest well Tigers . . . It’s almost naptime

I don’t have a problem with bat flips, maybe bc I’m youngish but I’d pimp it out if I hit a HR in the MLB.

I'm not even that young (39 on Friday), but I agree. If I hit one 450+ feet, you best believe I'm gonna stand and watch it and flip the bat.

To me, it’s bush league to show up another player by doing that crap. Someone should be wearing a fastball on the back if that occurs. A batters job is to hit the ball, so acting as if you just accomplished something never before done by you, simply by doing what your supposed to do is amateurish. Most of this behavior was brought on by the Latin American influence on the game in the states.
Something about watching a Clemson player making a swinging of the hammer gesture to his dugout after doubling, when he’s previously struck out twice and down 7-0 seems a bit odd to me. I’d put it in the same category of a fat woman downing a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts and then proceeding to stand up in the restaurant, bend over, and fart in celebration of her accomplishment.

Lol on the swinging the hammer gesture! I agree looks stupid especially when you are losing big or it is your first hit in your last 10 AB’s.

Hockey is the only sport left without a bunch of monkey business going on. Yeah, I know there are fights, but that is a way for the players to police their opponent and not allow for a bunch of side shows.

Back in my day you wouldn't finish your dance move because the kids parents and coach would take your butt out of the game.
I'm sure that kids mom would want to fight it that happened to her precious baby.

spectrum for way too long. Players could hardly celebrate without having a 95-100mph fastball buzz their (or their pitcher's) head the next time they were up at the plate.
I also thought baseball players acted like overly sensitive little children with their ridiculous unwritten rules of baseball.
I think there's a good balance that can be reached where players can celebrate and show some emotion while still keeping things fairly respectful.

Yup.
Pitchers have been able to be ###### for way too long. I’m happy to see a bat-flip and a stomp on the plate this day in age.

I'd suspect it's generational. I remember when players showing up wearing long pants and no stirrup socks was frowned upon. This generations showboating is Ken Griffey Jr's wearing his hat backwards.

No not really IMO. It's only this noticeable because we've seen it multiple times over the past few days. This has been going on for years. Remember guys like Roberto Clemente, Reggie Jackson, Dave Kingman, Yaz, Bo Jackson, Straw, Eric Davis, etc? They all did it as do the guys after them and in the game today. Some are a little more dramatic but it can always be handled with a fastball in the back pocket or a breaking ball to the shoulder, or a good "clean" hard slide. The players police themselves.
