1 Day For Eagle egg hatch (pip) (PIP EVE)

Today is PIP EVE.

God's work is amazing in so many ways. This is just one example. The million dollar view is not bad either.

We are one day from the first laid egg to start hatching. The eaglet inside will start pecking at the egg to get out. It may take a while.

Start paying close attention to nest today and Friday.

Shadow spent about 2 hours on the nest Wed. Weather was good.

Snow is moving in on Sat and Sunday. 6 to 12 inches. Just as the eaglets will be hatching. I am sure Jackie will be spending lots of time on the nest. Keep a check on it on Friday and the weekend.

Eagles build the largest stick nest and the one Jackie and Shadow occupy is 145 feet high in a pine tree. It is the highest eagle nest in America. The nest is appx. 6x7 feet. Nests can weigh up to 2 tons.

During the first two to three weeks after hatching at least one parent typically remains at the nest. Females are at the nest for about 90% of this time, and males are there about half as often. Although both males and females hunt for their nestlings, males provide most of the food. Nestlings are unable to tear apart their food until they are about six weeks old. Adults spend less time at the nest as the nestlings mature. Chicks fledge when they are eight to fourteen weeks old. In the few weeks prior to leaving the nest, they exercise their wings by flying to perches near the nest.

Fledglings remain near their parents and siblings for an additional two to ten weeks before they disperse. During this fledgling period the young spend increasingly less time with the adults and begin to hunt on their own. Because Eagles first breed when they are about five years old, they have a long period to explore and move about before they find a mate and establish a territory. Local food availability and weather play important roles in determining the extent of their migratory movements during this sub-adult stage of their life.

Enjoy watching God at work.

Been watching an osprey eat his breakfast in a tall sweetgum for the last half hour. Birds of prey are truly magnificent beasts.

Update on today, Thursday. At 9:50 a.m.pacific time, Shadow relieved Jackie. The nest camera focused in close on eggs during the nest swap. No pip yet.

21,000 viewers today from around the world. Jackie is more popular than Beyonce and Taylor Swift. And I think more beautiful.

Pay attention to nest for the next 4 days.

Unfortunately, the 3rd eaglet to emerge from egg will likely not survive. It will not be big enough to root out the older 2 for food from mom and dad. First to mom and dad's beak gets the food. That's nature for ya. No one is allowed by the Federal wildlife agency to interfere in any way with what is happening on the nest. Nature takes it course.

If you have Roku hooked up to your TV, go to you tube and enter BIG BEAR VALLEY EAGLE NEST, and click on it and you can watch the nest on your TV. Really good on my 70 inch TV.

Say a prayer for our new born eagles and parents.
