From Independent Mail:
It’s a win for non-skill position players and chips away at a long standing bias. “I think it’s just easier for offensive guys to get (awards) because of statistics,” Daniel coach Randy Robinson said.”People don’t appreciate sacks and tackles for loss or rushes on a quarterback as much as they do about a kid rushing for 200 yards in a game.” Lawson racked up plenty of those stats only his coaches and defensive junkies can appreciate. The three-time all-Western 3A selection finished with 99 tackles, 23 for a loss, nine sacks and five forced fumbles.
This season, however, it was impossible for Lawson’s impact on the field to go unnoticed. Even with running back from his own region making a run at the state’s single-season rushing record Lawson’s star shined the brightest, earning him Independent Mail Player of the Year honors.
