Clemson gains ground on Alabama in Coaches Poll |
Just how much is that first of three top-15-ranked wins by September’s end worth to the coaches?
Two first-place votes. After taking all four quarters to pull away from Boston College, Clemson lost some faith from the voters in both the Coaches and Associated Press polls last week, but that changed a little Sunday. The Coaches Poll gave Clemson six total first-place votes, sitting behind Alabama (58) and ahead of Oklahoma, Penn State and Washington in the top-five. Alabama downed Ole Miss 66-3 Saturday after opening SEC action with a 59-0 win over Vanderbilt. After a road win at Wake Forest, Florida State dropped out of the top-25 with its 1-2 start, while Miami moved up to No. 12 with an impressive 31-6 road win at Duke. Virginia Tech dropped seven spots to No. 19. NC State jumped into the top 25 at No. 24 after beating Syracuse. Quality wins over Auburn and Louisville only improved, where Auburn moved to No. 13 and Louisville No. 17 with victories Saturday. The first College Football Playoff committee rankings come out at the end of the month on Oct. 31.
