Elite defensive end talks Clemson visit, legacy as a Tiger

Wynn picked up an offer from Brent Venables Saturday

With two parents who hail from Clemson, Stephon Wynn, Jr. has always felt at home when on campus and at football games, but after Saturday’s visit the 2018 prospect has the opportunity to make Clemson his home for four years.

The Anderson (SC) T.L. Hanna defensive end attended Saturday’s junior day that was held in conjunction with a spring practice and picked up an offer from the hometown favorite.

Clemson joins North Carolina, Penn State, South Carolina and Tennessee as schools that have offered Wynn after defensive coordinator Brent Venables delivered the good news Saturday morning.

Wynn (6-4, 230) told TigerNet Saturday evening that Venables’ message was simple – Clemson will always be your home.

“Me and my dad, as soon as we walked on the field to watch practice, Coach Venables came over to us and was telling me how they wanted to offer me a scholarship and that I'll always have a home there,” Wynn told TigerNet Saturday. “They told me that they want me and that I have a home there at Clemson, but I still have to keep working hard and keep getting bigger and stronger.”

Wynn has the opportunity to be a second generation Tiger as his mother graduated from Clemson and his father, Stephon Wynn, Sr., played tight end for Clemson from 1990-1994. Wynn said his father is truly enjoying the recruiting process.

“He's very excited about it. He's never experienced Clemson like that. He's really enjoying the whole process like I am,” Wynn said.

The duo participated in the junior day activities and for the younger Wynn, it was really the first time he ever experienced the non-football side of Clemson.

“The visit was a lot of fun. We toured the campus. We went through the locker room and the weight room,” he said. “We rode on the bus like before a game to go down the hill. It was a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed the experience. I've been to Clemson a lot, but I've never really toured the campus like that. The locker room experience, I've never been through that.”

Outside of just being comfortable at Clemson, one of the reasons the Tigers resonate so well with Wynn is because of Venables.

“His fire and passion. I love Coach Venables,” he said. “His fire and passion for the game. He loves it more than anybody I've ever known. He just loves football.”

With nearly two years to go before National Signing Day 2018, Wynn said Clemson will be in contention for the duration.

“Clemson will always be one of my top schools. Both of my parents graduated from there,” he said. “I grew up knowing Clemson. That's all I knew, so they will always be one of the top schools on my list. I think we're going to come back for another spring practice and then we're definitely coming back to the spring game.”

In 2015, Wynn registered 65 total tackles, eight tackles for loss and three sacks.
