Demontez Stitt at baseball game

May 23, 2010, 7:36 AM

I took my three kids to the baseball game Saturday. We arrived early and were just casing the joint when I spotted Demontez Stitt sitting behind home plate. Probably with some other athletes, but I did not recognize them. Anyway, my 12-year-old son also spotted him and just looked at me like, Hey, do you see who I see? I motioned him back, and we coolly nodded to DS and were headed to find our seats in right field. A kindly old usher was watching us and, sensing that we just needed a word of encouragement, told us to double back and ask for an autograph. My too-cool-for-school daughter passed on it, but my two boys, equipped with Dad's ever-present ball-point pen, turned back and made their requests. Demontez could not have been nicer or more accommodating. He smiled as he signed his name on the boys' caps as if it were the first time he'd ever done so. He raced me down with the pen when the boys absentmindedly left it behind. His appearance was neat. There was not even a hint of big-time-athlete surliness to him. Honestly, we could not have had a more positive encounter with a Clemson University athlete if we had written up a request ourselves. (Oh, and his signature is ultra cool. If I can figure out how to do it, I'll take a photo of it and attach it later.) But please, all Clemson fans, take a moment and be thankful for the quality of people we have representing our school. I can now personally vouch for one. Thank you, Demontez.

The quality of the people is what makes Clemson sports so special.

Small correction my friend, the quality of the people is what makes Clemson, in general, so special.

I stand corrected

Sure is nice to be corrected in a quality manner, The athletes at some schools do not reflect the general population and it is great that it does at Clemson.

Stitt & Grant

My 9 year old spotted them both at the spring game, and promptly ran down to get their autographs. They were both very nice guys and talked to him a few minutes and signed his hat. And that was during all the OP drama. Bonus, you can actually read both autographs! Thanks to 2 great tiger athletes.

Well, in fairness....

...if I was a UCS athlete, I don't know that I'd be too keen on signing autographs while picking up trash on the roadside either.
