Twas the night before the game

‘Twas the night before the game, when all through the state
Not a creature was stirring, the eve of November 28.
The tailgates were set up by the stadium with care,
In hopes that the morning soon would be there.

The players were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of touchdowns danced in their heads.
And Spurrier in his visor, and Dabo “All tucked In”,
Had just finished preparing what to say should they win.

When out on the field there rose such a clatter,
Spurrier threw down his visor because of the matter.
Away to the endzone Spiller flew in a flash,
And “Tiger Rag” blared after the 40-yard dash.

The night before, the moon had a bright orange glow,
Foreshadowing what was to happen below.
When, with Spurrier wondering what might have been,
After CJ Spiller ran past a Gamecock with a nasty spin.

An insurance salesman, now seemingly a genie,
Steve knew in a moment it must be Dabo Swinney.
More rapid than those SEC Tigers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

“Now Spiller! Now Ford! Now Palmer and Parker!
On, DeAndre, On Ellington, On Chancellor and Harper!
To the back of the endzone! Through the goal post goes the ball!
Now celebrate! Celebrate! Celebrate all!”

As head coaches before the graveyard they go,
USC is the place where they stub their toe.
So into the locker room the players had wandered
As another great year has just been squandered.

And then, the celebration I heard from outside
The orange clad fans enjoying the ride.
As I mapped in my head, the route to Tampa Bay,
For the ACC Title, the Tigers would play.

They are dressed in all orange, from their head to their feet,
And revenge on the Jackets sure would be sweet!
A bundle of awards would reside in Death Valley,
After a win in the Orange Bowl in the season finale.

The fans were teary-eyed for it had been a long time,
Since the Tigers were at the top after the climb.
“Spiller for Heisman,” they yelled out loud
Never had Tiger fans been so proud!

The trophy shining bright, he held above his head
A wondrous joy had just been spread.
His genuine character captured everyone’s heart
Terry Don Phillips sure did look smart!

The wide-receivers coach is now king of The Hill,
He just earned himself $1.8 mil.
His quotable words and his daring smile
Took the Tigers that extra mile.

Clemson was now among the elite
And Tiger fans bowed at Swinney’s feet.
From day one he asked us to be “All In”
And he followed through with win after win.

Another year gone by, another Gamecock loss
Spurrier should call Dabo his boss.
Swinney told Spurrier, “Hey don’t be naïve,
You can’t spell Shreveport without S-T-E-V-E!”
