Spurrier stokes Urban Meyer-to-Notre Dame rumors
By LARRY HARTSTEIN

Atlanta Journa-Constitution

Thursday, May 14, 2009

There is no offseason when it comes to Steve Spurrier’s ability to stir things up.

Without prompting, the Head Ball Coach this week brought up rumors about Florida coach Urban Meyer bolting for Notre Dame.

In a long interview on the Paul Finebaum Radio Network, Spurrier called Meyer one of the nation’s top coaches, then digressed.

“They’ve still got that rumor going down there, Paul, that if he has about one more big year he might be the Notre Dame coach,” Spurrier said. “I know you’ve heard that rumor.”

Finebaum chimed in that “people at Notre Dame firmly believe” Meyer will jump to South Bend next year.

Meyer grew up in Ohio and has repeatedly referred to Notre Dame as his “dream job.” But he chose Florida over the Irish in 2004.

“It’d be surprising if he left, but who knows?” said Spurrier, the former Gators coach now heading South Carolina. “He’s accomplished so much. I mean, I left after 12 years because I just said, ‘Hey, I’ve done enough. Try something else.’ He may get to the point where he needs to try something else. Who knows?”

Confirming that he was speaking off the cuff, Spurrer added: “Maybe it was his dream job and not anymore. I don’t know.”

sorry steve...even if he left after this season...you're accomplishments now rate you as #2 on the FL's most beloved list.

Meyer made Gator fans forget all about Spurrier.....

May 15, 2009, 10:21 AM

and I think it hurts his feelings.

Spurrier hates it that Gator fans aren't missing him (at all).

Spurrier when they look into the ring of honor.

While Urban has clearly surpassed in short order what Spurrier did as a coach. Spurrier will always be beloved at Flroida because he played there and won the Heisman. No one will ever make Gator fans forget their golden boy.

Spurrier will be known as the one who started it all...

he used to be a god down in Gainesville, but now he has lost some of his "legacy", of course losing in Washington and Columbia hasnt helped.

They wont forget that they get to kick his @$$ every yr

May 15, 2009, 10:33 AM [ in reply to LOL... good one... at least they are easily reminded about ]

too. Spurrier left a sour taste in all their mouths when he bolted for NFL. Only reason they missed him is they werent winning. Now, since they are winning again, the only time SOS name comes up is the annual beat down they put on the gas pumpers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sorry... they love Spurrier. You can believe differently if

May 15, 2009, 10:36 AM

you like. But all you have to do is ask the fans. Without exception, every one of them that I've spoken with will always love Spurrier.

Why does that notion bother some of you guys?

You honestly think you'd love Danny Ford less if Dabo Swinney (or some other guy) came to Clemson and won 2 national titles. Of course not.

You do realize you can only boast about his accomplishments at another school other than your own?

Pathetic isnt it?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who is boasting? I'm not a a Gator fan.

May 15, 2009, 10:42 AM

I'm just telling you how it is. I already said that Meyer had eclipsed what Spurrier did as a coach. And that's amazing when you consider relatively speaking how short his tenure has been.

But also... Spurrier will have something Meyer never will. He is an alum, and heisman winner. He'll always be a Florida golden boy for that.

Some people here want to pretned that Spurrier is somehow no longer loved as a result of what Meyer is doing now. That's not really very logical.

Of course they will always recognize his accomplishments as a player and coach, but like I said his actions and comments have soured their thoughts of him. Their missing him was mistaken for missing winning.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Have you guys been to Gainesville?

May 15, 2009, 11:04 AM

UF is a great school, ranking among the top twenty public universities in the country by any measure. UF has a great campus, in a big state, rich with donors and college football prospects. In the very recent past, the Gators have won two national titles in football AND two national titles in basketball.

Steve Spurrier coaches football in Columbia SC. The man has been to the top of the mountain and he knows what it looks like. Gainesville does not look, feel, act, smell or in anyway remotely resemble the place Spurrier lives and works now.

You cannot blame Spurrier for being depressed. He looks around and he thinks, "FML"

I have been to Gainsville twice to find that it wasn't nearly what I expected. They cram a lot of folks in there but they just weren't that loud and rowdy. Red Stick blows the Swamp away IMO as does the real Death Valley.

Death valley has never been as loud in the times I have been there. Not to say DV isn't a loud, boisterous environment mind you.

i have experience with LSU. I always expected UT to be loud, just based on shear size of the stadium, but while it's a good time, it is not nearly as loud as I expected.

I think that if fat boy gets canned at ND, if Meyer does not take the Irish job, Spurrier might to get out of Gas Pumper Tech.... he was the man when he was in Gainesville, but now he is head clucker he is the second best coach that UF has ever had and most likely the 4th or 5th best Gas Pump U has ever had...before you bust out laughing, I think their best caoches are in this order:
1. Morrison
2. Carlen
3. Holtz
4. Dietzel
5. Spurrier
