Recruiting Update- News and Notes

Dec 11, 2015, 10:18 AM

Potential Silent commit?- Top LB Rahshaun Smith is slated to be in Clemson this weekend and will be announcing at the Under Armour All-American game. He's supposed to be an early enrollee. Is there a chance he'll give a silent verbal to the staff given that he may arrive on campus in January? <img border=

ATH Bryan Edwards will announce some time next week. He will visit South Carolina this weekend but Dabo Swinney will get the final in home visit before the dead period. No time or date was given on the decision.

Clemson has offered 2018 ATH Justin Watkins (6-0 160) of Citra, FL. Watkins checked out Clemson's campus this past summer.

2017 WR Keyshawn Johnson Jr. could miss the California state title game due to an in-game skirmish last week. Johnson took exception to a late hit on a teammate with three minutes remaining and a 32-3 lead. He was ejected from play. The suspension could carry over to next season as well. Johnson had 68 receptions this year. He'll be taking another visit to Nebraska soon.

The Tiger staff was recently in the midwest and sent out an offer to 2017 QB Hunter Johnson (6-3 200). He's rated the #1 QB in his class according to 247sports. In 10 games as a junior, he is 174 of 316 passing for 2545 yards with 31 TDs and 12 INTs- also rushed for 231 yards on 76 tries with 2 TDs.

Other 2017 QBs in the mix are Chase Brice of Loganville GA, Jason Brown of Fredericksburg VA, Connor Curry of Shreveport, Hendon Hooker of Greensboro, and Auburn commit Lowell Narcisse. QB Jake Bentley recently named Stanford his leader.

Perhaps the biggest news in recruiting for Clemson is the return of star junior WR Mike Williams. I'd say thats a 6* pick up.

LB commit Tre Lamar and Roswell high will play for a state title as they beat Grayson 30-26. Grayson took a 26-23 lead with 35 seconds left but a nice return and a 35 yard pass would be the difference. Wow!

OL commit Chandler Reeves was a road-paver this year and Friday was no different in leading Eagle's Landing Christian to a 35-14 win over top seeded Prince Avenue Christian. Reeves led the way blocking as his squad had two 100-yard rushers in the contest.

TE commit JC Chalk has 43 receptions for 455 yards and 4 TDs this year. He also has 72 yards rushing with 2 TDs. His Argyle team (14-1) will face 12-2 Wylie on Friday.

Plant City high ended their season 11-2 after a 17-7 loss to Braden River. WR commit TJ Chase had 109 receiving yards and a 24 yard TD catch in the game. He finished the year with 32 grabs for 593 yards and 9 scores. On defense he had 90 tackles, 2 INTs, and 9 breakups.

Clemson has offered 2017 4* WR Amari Rodgers (5-10 195) of Tennessee. He decommitted from SoCal and will take a visit to Clemson. His father, Tee Martin, coaches at SoCal.

4* CB Trayvon Mullen will visit Louisville instead of Clemson, per reports. Coaches from Clemson will still visit him.

Tiger coaches stopped by to check in on 2017 RB Cordarrian Richardson of Memphis. An offer was extended to Richardson (5-10 220) who rushed for more than 2,000 yards this year and had 19 TDs.

2017 RB prospect Colin Wilson (5-11 200) scored three TDs in Clay highs 34-24 loss to Wakula last week. He was on campus for the GT game this fall. He's certainly one to keep an eye on.

Last year I had hoped our Tigers would make a move with special teams guru Blake Gillikin. He averaged 44.3 yards per punt this season and 62 of 77 kickoffs have gone into the end zone. He'll join Penn State next year.

Speaking of punters, Austin Kent of Charlotte is still being evaluated by our staff. The senior averaged 47 yards per punt and 34 of his 38 kickoffs went for a touch back.

Fred Hansard is the 5th rated DT in the 2017 class and he announced on Twitter that Clemson is clearly one of his favorites. Breyon Gaddy is another top DT to keep an eye on and he was on campus earlier this fall for a game.

Star OL Isaiah Wilson announced he will visit Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, and Georgia this offseason. He will later narrow his list to 8. Clemson made his prior list.

Superman was once mistaken for Deshaun Watson...

If you are in the upstate next weekend check out the Shrine Bowl at Wofford's Gibbs Stadium. Clemson players on the SC roster are Tavien Feaster and Nyles Pinckney. Others are OL John Simpson, DB Troy Pride, ATH Bryan Edwards and OL Cade Stewart.

Playing for North Carolina will be Tiger commits Cornell Powell and Sean Pollard. Dexter Lawrence and Diondre Overton are also on the NC roster.

One look at 4* ATH Juwan Burgess' Twitter account and you'll notice he appears very pro-Clemson.

Think about this- Clemson beat four 10-win or more teams this year- Notre Dame (10-2) App State (10-2) UNC (11-2) FSU (10-2). Alabama beat one in Florida (10-3).

QB Kyle Allen, a 6-3 210 lb former 5* recruit, has been granted a release from Texas A&M. Allen finished the regular season 160-283 passing for 2,210 yards, 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. For his career at A&M, he had 3,532 yards, 33 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

DB JJ Givens has decommitted from South Carolina. He has mentioned taking visits to Wisconsin, Ole Miss, and Arizona State.

WR Kelvin Harmon had decommitted from South Carolina.

4* OLB Daelin Hayes has given a verbal to Notre Dame. Hayes is a very talented prospect and one to keep an eye on.

Miami's Mark Richt is making a move on Georgia DB commit Malek Young. He'll take an official visit to Miami on January 15th. This could get interesting...

Top QB prospect Jacob Eason visited Florida last week and will visit Georgia this weekend with his parents. Will there be any wild party photos like last week surfacing now that mom and dad will be with him? We'll see. Eason is an early enrollee.

WR Shaquery Wilson has been released from UGA. If he chooses a D1 school, he'll have to sit out next year and have three years left. He was the #37 WR in his class.

Pitt received a commitment from 3* DE Patrick Jones of Chesapeake, VA. He chose the Panthers over NC State and VaTech.

WR Chris Black will transfer from Alabama and as a grad student he can play immediately. Surgery ended the redshirt junior's season.

RB Dewah Whaley has decommitted from Georgia. He is now trending towards Texas.

3* LB David Reese decommitted from Michigan because they won't allow him to enroll in January. Florida and Texas are now going after him hard.

I'll be releasing a 'Top 216' in 2016 soon. Curious to know- who do you like as the top prospect for next years class?

Have a fantastic weekend and Go Tigers!

Nice write up, thanks for the work.

One correction, Dexter Lawrence has withdrawn his name and won't be on the roster for the Shrine Bowl.

Why didn't we offer the Pride kid, thought we needed help at safety and corner Edwards visiting usc. Hope we close strong 247 projects Simpson to usc. I think the OG we just got from Georgia will be a steal.

Dec 11, 2015, 11:06 AM

Regarding why we didn't offer Troy Pride, I believe that's a question way above my pay grade. Why did we wait so long to offer OrTre Smith? Couldn't tell ya a definitive answer. Perhaps its because Brent and Mike Reed like taller DBs and Pride is under the 6 foot range. Maybe its because he was committed to VaTech when he visited here (for the Notre Dame game). He has since decommitted but I believe VaTech and Notre Dame are his leaders. South Carolina is offering him immediate playing time though and Muschamp has been all up in his ear.

Re: jamyest williams?***

Dec 11, 2015, 10:51 AM

Still in good standing with him. Get the feeling Jamyest really likes us. He's certainly enjoyed the process the year as he's made trips to numerous schools and I believe he was on campus for the Clemson vs FSU game. That must've been a good visit... What remains to be seen is how he feels about the coaching changes at Georgia and how that will factor in. I know he Tweeted the following a week or so ago, “Welcome home Kirby! (Will) Muschamp gonna get the job too and that’s going to be a match made in heaven for UGA.” We should know more about our standing on or around Clemson's elite junior day. I'll be sure to keep ya updated. Here's the profile I have for him:

ATH Jamyest Williams 5-9 173 Lawrenceville, GA Archer HS

Attended the 2015 Clemson/FSU game. Rivals.com gives Williams 4 stars. 24/7.com rates Williams as a 4 star prospect, the #9 athlete, and #84 overall. Has a 275 bench, 400 squat, adn 40" vert. Visited for the Deshaun Watson vs scar game. The DB MVP at 2015 The Opening Regional in Atlanta. Ran a 4.4 40 at the Adidas Showcase, a 4.44 40 at Dawg Night, and a 4.45 at GT Camp. He was named First-Team DB MaxSports Freshman All-American (2013). He also earned MVP Freshman at the Army All-American Game in San Antonio, Texas (2013). All-Region Honorable Mention (2013). All-Gwinnett County Honorable Mention (2013). Holds a 3.4 GPA. Has offers from CU, FSU, UGA, GT, UK, Mich, and others.

The latest from The Opening, July 2015- The gambler in the secondary was definitely 2017 Top247 athlete Jamyest Williams, who repeatedly chose to jump the routes to the sideline. Twice he came up with nothing but air, but he also reeled in a pair of interceptions. Williams is a scrappy defensive back in the mold of former LSU standout Tyrann Mathieu. He recently announced a top 10 with Clemson on top, followed by FSU.

From the 2015 The Opening Regional in Atlanta- He took top defensive honors at the prestigeous combine and really opened some eyes. "The Top100 cornerback from Lawrenceville (Ga.) Archer has quick feet, is very aggressive and could play corner, nickel or safety on the next level."- Steve Wiltfong

On Coach Reed- ''He's an aggressive coach and he knows what he's talking about,” Williams said. “He played in the league - coached in the league - he knows all about technique and perfecting your craft, every day in practice.”

4.39 40 Time Film-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKlqR2jDnsM

Further reading on Williams- "Archer ATH Jamyest Williams is a versatile athlete who played CB, KR, Slot WR, and even some RB at times on Friday night vs. Sandy Creek. He is not the biggest guy, but showed quickness with the ball in his hands. I was not impressed with him at corner, as he let some guys get behind him on two separate occasions, both leading to big plays, and one going for a touchdown. Williams also missed multiple tackles.

He is very athletic, and has the potential to be a solid WR at the next level. He has big play potential, and Archer tried to get him the ball throughout the game. One play impressed me in the 1st quarter when Williams jumped high for a ball in traffic and used his strong hands to secure the catch after being hit hard by Javon Jackson of Sandy Creek. He also had a couple of catches on swing routes, each going for about 10-15 yards. He showed good agility on short passes and kick returns, making defenders miss and getting an extra 5 yards.

Overall, Williams is good player on offense for Archer--a guy they really like with the ball. He started at corner also, but did not stand out at all on defense. I was a little surprised with his offer list so far, especially at CB, but being a 2017 kid, he has plenty of time to get better. He is a very good player for only being a Sophomore." http://georgia.scout.com/story/1438148-what-i-learned-watching-jamyest-williams

Game film- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iag2Po7lwyw

His take on Clemson- “My favorite would probably be Clemson, right now, I would say. I don’t really have a top-five right now,” Williams said. “How me and the coaches relate, the facilities, the education…the city, it’s a calm city, I could be myself and not get in much trouble.” From October 20th, 2014

Re: Zerrick Cooper seems like he can't get here quick enough

Dec 11, 2015, 11:46 AM

In regards to Zerrick, I'm not sure there is a ceiling on him. He's done some phenomenal things like leading his school to its first region title in decades. Folks were so concerned about how he'd bounce back from the knee injury and it was as if they'd just written him off for this season. Boy were they wrong. He ended up being region player of the year. He came out this past summer and showed them all wrong on the big stage. Cooper didn't miss a beat and was slinging the ball all over the field as if there never was an injury.

Here's what one "expert analyst" said of Cooper early last summer, LOL:
"There is no further evaluation for Cooper. So while he is ranked No. 98 in the ESPN 300 he hasn't been seen since last spring essentially. Since he is rehabbing his knee he more likely will not compete in any Elite 11 or quarterback challenges and probably not in spring practice. So he is a guy that will head into his senior year, while he is ranked, it is really an unknown the level of talent that he is right now. So he is essentially a year behind other quarterbacks right now."

So here we (Clemson) are sitting here with the best QB in the nation, a solid versatile backup in Kelly Bryant, a Florida state record holder in Tucker Israel behind him, and we've got an elite prospect like Cooper coming in. WOW. There's definitely some truth behind the saying 'We Too Deep.'

2 questions

Dec 11, 2015, 4:55 PM

Where do you think Mullen ends up since he decided not to visit us?

For 2017, what guys are we recruiting that may end up being 5*s?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: 2 questions

Dec 11, 2015, 5:17 PM

I think Mullen ends up at FSU but Bama wants him and is all up in his ear. I think he's kinda relaxed his affair with TCU or atleast thats how it would seem to appear. Not sure what kinda push UofL is making but I'd imagine they could push immediate playing time. Really hoping that our in-home visit goes well and he takes an unofficial here.

Regarding the 5* guys in the 2017 class, well much of that will depend on how much camp exposure they get next summer, their health, and how they perform if they do camp. Publicity, unfortunately, is also a huge determining factor by some sites. I can assure you that when I do release my 'Top 216' in 2016 it will likely be much different then what the 'pundits' have.

Just spit balling it here off the top of my head but I think a few 5*'s could be OL Isaiah Wilson, DB Darnay Holmes, perhaps DB DeAngelo Gibbs or LB Justin Foster, DL/ATH Eric 'the Bull' Crosby, DL Breyon Gaddy, maybe OL Taderell Slaton, possibly Jamyest Williams, and an outside chance with RB D'Andre Swift. Surprisingly, as of now there aren't that many DEs that are really wowing folks but again its still early. I'm sure somebody will show up to The Opening and look like they mean business.

Re: 2 questions

Dec 11, 2015, 5:20 PM

Thanks, I was hoping for another 5* qb.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: 2 questions

Dec 11, 2015, 5:43 PM

Well, the talent pool at QB is deep next year but I still haven't seen anybody who has really been an elite guy just yet. Lowell Narcisse is probably my guy in this class. He just gets it done and puts up massive numbers. I really hope theres a shake up at Auburn and he decides to go to Clemson. Can't say enough about his ability and you can hold me to that.

Bailey Hockman might be the guy for the 2017 class. He's playing on another level. Jake Bentley looks for real, especially against good competition but I'm gonna hold off on that for now. Tate Martell is getting plenty of that 'eye test' love but he's maybe five-foot-ten. Connor Curry could be that guy who burst onto the seen as far as our recruits. Hendon Hooker is pretty versatile and looked sharp this year. Chase Brice is certainly good; as is Kellen Mond.

Theres plenty of guys who play in obscure football levels or states that I'm gonna hold off of until I see more but keep an eye on those folks. One that comes to mind is Hunter Johnson who we just offered. I want to see some more of him before I put him high up on my board. Still need to do some more evaluating on him. Keep your eye on Dylan McCaffrey of Colorado. He's got the size and appears to be ok on tape.

My real QB sleeper in this class would be QB Tua Tagovailoa (6-1 190) of Hawaii. He's got some giddy up in his step and I like his pass delivery. If he grows, develops, and camps well then you could see some real hype around him because of that Hawaii pipeline created by Mariotta. It may take him a few seasons to develop into a D1 starter but he'll probably light things up for Oregon or whoever.
