1959 Sugar Bowl v. LSU

Jan 18, 2013, 10:51 AM

Here's a couple of pics of mementos from the '59 Sugar Bowl v. LSU. The framed photo is the only known color picture of the team in their Sugar Blues jerseys. The framed jersey is my dad's Sugar Blue. If you look at the the game picture, number 79 is the first number you notice. The watch was their gift from the bowl. It's an automatic Hamilton that hadn't run since the late 60's. Hamilton couldn't fix it, but in 1988 I found a guy in Jacksonville who repaired it for my father's 50th birthday. He gave it to me as a gift about 10 years ago. It has his name and "Clemson v. LSU" engraved on the back.

The Country Gentleman and mascot are walking to midfield where the Clemson captains are for the coin toss. Coach Howard is addressing the troops. And good old "DumDum" as Coach Howard called my father bringing up the rear.

That score came after a fluke play. Our Long snapper

snapped the ball into the blocking back in punt formation. If memory serves LSU scored on the first play after the botched snap. THe pass was thrown by the heisman winner Billy Cannon on a halfback pass.

Those jerseys were some of the best looking we ever had. Yours has obviously faded with time. They were a bright Navy Blue with orange sholder stripes and silver numbers. The second time we wore them was my Rat year against the coots. Won the game on a late Rodney Rogers field goal.....
