Tigers, Clemson needs your help.

Mar 29, 2009, 5:24 PM

Received this e-mail from Clemson's Student gov't. I know what we can do when it comes down to bowl games, so I think we can do even better here.

Fellow Students,

As I am sure you’ve heard, Governor Mark Sanford has announced his intention to decline Federal Stimulus funding for South Carolina. As a result, colleges and universities in our state stand to lose approximately $119 million in one-time funding. This news comes as higher education has sustained significant cuts to their base budgets and funding has reached a devastating low point.

Today I am asking you to email Governor Sanford on behalf of Clemson University with the message below. Please know that if you are in any way uncomfortable with this message, you can simply choose not to participate. This is Clemson University’s official position and in no way seeks to place you in a compromising position.

The Governor’s email address is:
mark@gov.sc.gov.

Governor Sanford has until Thursday to accept Stimulus funding for South Carolina. Please send your email between now and Wednesday, April 1.
---------------------------------------------------------

Dear Governor Sanford,
[Personalize your introductory paragraph with your class year, hometown, etc.]

Clemson University is providing South Carolina’s students with one of the nation’s finest educations without sacrificing quality. Quality in higher education is not the problem — it is part of the solution.

Therefore, it is critically important for South Carolina to accept Federal stimulus funding for our institutions of higher education. Enabling schools to use these funds for necessary one-time projects will allow them to strategically plan for the impact of recurring cuts sustained by higher education to date.

Sincerely,

---------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for your service and dedication to Clemson University and all of South Carolina’s colleges and universities during this critical time. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I fully understand Sanford's hesitation at taking the money---or at least his preference for paying off debt with the money......but leo's right.

Regardless of whether South Carolina accepts the money or not, SC citizens and the children and grandchildren of SC citizens will be helping to pay off the debt.

You a student or working tax payer? Take a stand for something other than a hand-out. Anyone who wants to have a hefty mortgage hanging over them for three or four generations needs a lobotomy. Glad OUR governor has a pair! BTW, Clemson will be just fine.

for the record, i think the bailouts have been terrible ideas. i think the democratic government is using the spirit of FDR to try and bail us out of this economy history has shown that won't work.

however, the bailout has been passed and we are going to get stuck with the bill whether or not we take the money. so to suffer the consequences without getting any of the benefit would be ridiculous at this point.

i'll "take a stand" when november comes and we can vote people into office who understand how to fix a free market economy but right now, it's a moot point.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wonder how much Clemson will actually get?

Mar 29, 2009, 6:28 PM

Probably most will go to tech schools. Then most of the rest to Columbia and then Charleston schools.

Hope they track where the money goes and how much Clemson gets.

Still don't think you can turn down the money. Maybe turn down money going to certain areas like some of the unemployment benefits where SCar will end up losing money over the longhual trying to keep it up.

It doesn't sound like much, if any, would actually go to Clemson. Rather, it would go to programs that are likely unsustainable in the long term.

Furthermore, as the article mentions, the state legislature gets a second crack if the Sanford turns it down. So, he could make an ideological stand while the state still ends up getting the money.

Re: Tigers, Clemson needs your help.

These are not my words but they apply.

Catching Wild Pigs

A chemistry professor in a large college had some exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in the lab the professor noticed one young man (exchange student) who kept rubbing his back, and stretching as if his back hurt..
The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country's government and install a new communist government.
In the midst of his story he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked, 'Do you know how to catch wild pigs?'
The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said this was no joke. 'You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the free corn. When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming. When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence. They get used to that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side. The pigs, who are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat, you slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd.
Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon they go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity.
The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees happening to America. The government keeps pushing us toward socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as supplemental income, tax credit for unearned income, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, etc. While we continually lose our freedoms -- just a little at a time.
One should always remember: There is no such thing as a free lunch! Also, a politician will never provide a service for you cheaper than you can do it yourself.
Also, if you see that all of this wonderful government 'help' is a problem confronting the future of democracy in America, you might want to send this on to your friends. If you think the free ride is essential to your way of life then you will probably delete this email, but God help you when the gate slams shut!
Keep your eyes on the newly elected politicians who are about to slam the gate on America.

"A government big enough to give you everything you want, is big enough to take away everything you have" Thomas Jefferson
