"Act like you've been there before!"

Oct 24, 2006, 12:27 AM

I used to always hear this statement from my father when I was getting a chance to something really special...out of the ordinary....something so special that many people would do all sorts of things just to have a chance to do.

He said that the day before, me as a brash young Clemson Sophomore cramed my skinny body in the back seat of a Honda Civic and headed for Miami in 1981...to see our Tigers beat Nebraska and take home a National Title.

You see, I can't speak for the rest of you.

But I've been there before.

Therefore, I can state unequivicably that I know what it's like to be an excited fan of a group of talented and eager soldiers of fortune, who fight their battles on a field which is 100 yards long. You see, I've been there before.

However, this team is special..much like our Tigers of 1981.

They're probably not going to win a National Title, but that's ok. It doesn't take away from the incredible feats they're in the middle of doing. It doesn't take away from their dogged determination and hellbent on winning attitude.

They play like they've been there before.

And, in all my weird ways, cheer them on like I've been there before too!

Here's to you, Clemson Football!

Like me, you've been there before and I'm just pleased as punch that you're taking me along with you.

And, Dad. Dad...Oh, my loving Dad.

I wish you could go along with this as well.

You're 82 years old now and riddled with Alzheimers.

Yet if you could, I know you'd be cheering our Tigers along in this special season.

Don't worry Dad.

I'll take up your slack and hopefully we'll continue this magic ride that is Clemson Football-2006.

You see Dad, we're Clemson.

And we've been here before!

Go Tigers!

My dad always told me, "Act like you've been there before!"

Oct 24, 2006, 7:08 AM

when he coached me in little league and we won (or lost) a big game. He's been dead 17 years and I still remember his advice. That's hy I've been to every place we have played (Athens, raleigh, Maryland, etc.) and never had anyone give me any trouble.

Last year in Columbia I was telling my wife about this as we exited the stadium amidst some Clemson (young) fans that obviously did nit receive (or heed) this same advice.

I said my dad always said "Act like you've been there before!" and a USC fan told me that he appreciated the fact that CU DID have a large # of fans that did believe in this and he appreciated it.

Of course he also had "been there before" when it came to losing to us but I did not point that out.

Herbstreit says this when you run the score up during a game.Go for two and he will say,"this team should act like they've been here before."
