TDP and Billy D called this am regarding the billboard...

1

Nov 30, 2007, 11:22 AM

Talked to Billy first...good conversation discussed sportsmanship, the intense nature of the rivalry and the fact that no laws were broken, nobody got hurt, nobody was slandered...all statements were truthful. We also had a few laughs and I am meeting with both of them tomorrow (at my suggestion) in the spirit of cooperation and mending the fence.

TDP apologized for the hastily written letter but felt it was necessary to get something out yesterday. I told him the apology wasn't necessary, but was accepted. I told him that I had sent him an email last night (that he hadn't received yet because he was at the winter meetings in Jacksonville) explaining my position on sportsmanship and that it is the only point where I diagreed with his first letter issued yesterday. We discussed the intense rivalry and the fact that these kind of good, clean pranks is what college football rivalries ar all about. We also shared a few laughs. TDP is a good person, a lawyer and corporate man who wants what is best for Clemson and is indeed tuned into the rivalry with USC.

In my letter to TDP last night (and again this morning), I also apologized for any problems the billboard may have casued him and the university. I told him at least I didn't get in a plane and drop a live chicken on the USC second baseman (see story in many books on Clemson lore).

I want all of you to respect TDP for what he has to do in representing the university and understand that he had to make some sort of statement as the Gamecocks were in an uproar, even though there may have been some behind the scenes chuckling. He understands the spirit of my intentions as again, good, clean fun...taking a few jabs at our rival and their head football coach.

Lunch should be fun tomorrow.

Where you doing lunch?

I wouldn't mind eavesdropping. Thanks, crazy.

Wait til he gets home and sees the billboard by his house.

umm, aren't those two things kind of mutually exclusive?

I'd go with "TDP is a good person, a corporate man who wants what is best for clemson."

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

there are a lot of good lawyers

Nov 30, 2007, 12:04 PM

the good ones usually go on to do something else, or they end up in corporate law or real estate.

“The best moment was on draft day when (N.C. State’s Mario Williams, Manny Lawson and John McCargo) all got picked in the first round,” said Dustin Fry. “That was kind of nice knowing we ran for 254 yards against three first-round defensive linemen.”

Great post and great content,

So what prank will you do next year to top this one???

This is one of those events that stories will be told and

1

Nov 30, 2007, 11:40 AM

written about regarding the rivalry. I for one think it was hilarious. The only thing I can see people getting upset about was putting Rodney Paulk's name on it, but the point was to call Spurrier to the carpet. He's fair game.

To all of those that were peeved with the billboard, I say, "c'mon, man; chill out, it's all in good fun."

This is hardly bad sportsmanship. The Clemson cadets drew bayonets on the USC fans in 1902 for God's sake.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I like both TDP and Billy D

Nov 30, 2007, 11:40 AM

but I disagree that this makes Clemson University look bad. Tell it as it is. It is not poor sportsmanship, it is reporting the news which The State and every other newspaper in the state has somehow forgotten to do. I hope the Gamecock fans do get mad. Makes it better!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't post much but...

Nov 30, 2007, 11:43 AM

I had to smile about your line...I told him at least I didn't get in a plane and drop a live chicken on the USC second baseman (see story in many books on Clemson lore). My grandfather was one of the two involved in that stunt and I still laugh about it from time to time. As for the billboard, I wonder if WIS-TV or whatever it is ever reported about the "Jad Dean wide left" bumper stickers the Chickens made???

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can y'all expound on that? I'd love to hear that story.***

My cousin wrote a story about our grandfather that passed away this summer (Don Wade) that appeared in the Furman game program. In that story he described what happened this way...To fully understand his fun-loving personality,
there is no better place to start than his days as a
Clemson student. I have heard this story numerous
times from numerous people. However, not until
this past summer when I heard the story from Fred
Cone did I get the full effect of what happened on a
spring day at Clemson in the early 1950s.
Mr. Cone and my grandfather were playing
tennis one afternoon as the Tigers and Gamecocks
renewed their rivalry on the baseball diamond.
Rather than leave the tennis court and go directly to
the game, they decided to make their entrance to
the game a grand one (and their stay a short one).
Coach Wade and Cone were members of Clemson?s
flight club and used that membership to help pull off
the stunt of a lifetime.
Mr. Cone and ?Don Daddy? took off in a plane.
Their only passenger was a live chicken. As they
circled the Clemson area, they carefully timed their
descent on the baseball field, which at the time was
located where the Hoke Sloan Tennis.
The Gamecocks? inning
ended and they took the field. At
that point, the plane came flying in
at a low altitude from centerfield. As
the plane came closer to the infield,
the chicken was dropped from the
plane. The chicken did not fly, and
it landed on the ground behind
second base. The two future
Clemson Hall of Famers landed the
plane and made it back to the
game. However, the ?chicken drop?
also ended their flight-club
memberships.

from my friend Bill D'Andrea. I personally dont see the issue. there are so many usc fans that laughed at it and there are those who are bothered by it - WHO CARES!!
I live in Columbia and personally have to listen to this mess everyday - for example I PAID money to go see Kenny Chesney in April.....do you know that Spurrier WALKED out on the stage and said Clemson fans - you better watch out....its the end for you. I didnt pay money to see nor hear that!! tell TDP to come live in columbia for one month.

Nov 30, 2007, 11:54 AM

what imo is one of the funniest and least harmful pranks of this rivalry.

It is refreshing to see a clever response to some of the arrogant stuff said and done by Mr. Spurrier. I'm sure most of the Clemson alumni and fans in Columbia are even more appreciative.

I look forward to the creative responses that USC fans try to pull off in another 4 years when they win again.

Thank you for an entertaining and enjoyable week on Tigernet.
