Two cars

I am going to look at today. Thought? Dumb ones and good ones.
First up is 1984 Chevrolet with 93k, off frame restoration, however its a 3 speed AUTOMATIC. So I am having a hard time liking the automatic.

A buddy of mine recently bought an old Tahoe. He rarely travels very far, so MPG isn't a concern.
It's pretty cool to see one of those old rigs in great shape.
If that's what you're looking for, I have a 1990 Oldsmobile Delta 88. it's not in GREAT shape, but it's in decent shape. 325K miles. Make me an offer.

My offer, which I know you won't refuse, is an autographed picture of Tommy Bowden and half-eaten bag of Reese's Pieces. I'm even willing to sweeten the deal with 350 UNUSED AOL CDs.

Make it a whole bag of Reese's Pieces and I'll throw in my granddad's tape collection that I have kept in the armrest.
It includes over 20 cassettes featuring:
The Platters The "Glitter Man" himself, Liberace Amy Grant John Williams St. Patrick's Cathedral Christmas Mass A recording of my Granddad singing the Star Spangled Banner A Capella ... and many more...

It has an even lower HP engine the 5.3 they put in them now. That and the tan interior in them turns a weird color of tan and yellow after a while, snd teh leather in ALL of them cracks up worse than tan mom's face.
The trick would be that truck as a 2500, with the NEW 910 lb-ft duramax in it. Like like what the Duraburb guy does to later model Suburbans:

For some reason, I always felt like my 90's 5.7's delivered more power than the 2 2000's 5.3's I had. I say "delivered" because I knew the 5.3 was supposed to be more powerful. I think it was the trans shift points that gave me that impression. The 2000's I had seemed pussified (tahoe and 1500 truck).

The early 2000's still had 4 speeds.
Feb 18, 2019, 3:25 PM
|
|
I think they did that until 2007-ish. Then they went to the failure prone 6 speed, and even worse failure prone 8 speed. I think they *finally* got the 8 speed right in 2018, and now in 2019/2020 they go to a Ford/GM designed 10 speed. I've already heard horror stories on the truck version of it, and it hasn't been n production very long.
the 1999 (same bodystyle as in the pic) had a 5.7l V8 that rated at 255hp @ 4600 and 330 lb-ft @ 2800
The 2000 Sub had 285hp @ 5200, and 325 lb-ft@ 4000
The 2018 has 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque.
The 6.2 l in the newer Suburbans is better, but none of them are what I'd call fast.

The pre-Vortec 5.7's were dogs, but they really improved in 1996.

They all had the 5.7, but 1996 brought a big bump.
Feb 18, 2019, 5:55 PM
|
|
They redesigned the cylinder head and some other things to make the Vortec 5700 for 1996+ trucks.
HP went up like 60hp and torque went up something like 25-30 as a result.
Driving a 1996 next to an earlier one is night and day. It's not going to set the world on fire in stock form, but it's not a pig, and I'd take one over a 5.3 any day.

The Suburban has a bench seat as well. Lay your side piece all the way down behind the bowling alley type of bench seat.

this concept.
Simple utilitarian vehicle that meets DOT specs. Whether its a 4x4 or a commuter car. Or even make both. It'd be like a modern day Model T. EVERYONE would own one.
Teh 4x4 would probably sell me. I mean look at the new Jeep. I saw one at the dealer I was at and it stickered in the upper 40's. WTH is buying a 50 K jeep wrangler? They don;t discount those things for chit, either.
Also--I saw the new Ram 1500 truck (67K, BTW) that had the tablet screen in it. It looks like a Tesla. Was dammm nice on the inside though.

buy the Mahindra. Or just get a Polaris Ranger or something.
I'm wondering if these new cars with all of the tech are going to end up lasting very long. I figure you might get 150k miles or so out of one before it becomes cost prohibitive to fix. And all of the active fuel management garbage is wreaking havoc on engine components. They're probably designed to be like that, though.

I love my 5cyl diesel and the only thing an EMP attack may shut down on my car is maybe the alarm system which has nothing to do with anything else on the car that can't be overcome by using a key in a cylinder.
Fuel, oil, compression and timing and you're off. The only possible thing that can happen to this car that I can't fix is the injector pump going south and I change fuel filters when I change oil every 3000-3500 miles with Rotella dino oil and new Mann filters. I expect it will make it another 500K.

early 2000's electronics on cars.
I don't generally hear much about electronics (not sensors, but body control modules) causing issues. I don't know of any manufacture that can't update their code in the BCM's (or whatever each manufacturer calls them), and its a pretty simple thing to do for technician.
I see more issues with transmissions, emissions systems and general pieces of the car (plastic handles, etc).

Well, I went and saw and didnt spend any money yet. They have a white one, almost identical to that K20 and it was frame off as they were working on it and getting it ready. What a cool shop and unfortunately for me, right by the house, didnt know it was back in there.
I will post some pics I got later. I agree, the prices are a bit steep, but they sure do a heck of a job with restoration.
