Carolina Stadium is regarded as one of the top college baseball stadiums in the country.
South Carolina aims to keep it that way.
USC approved a $4.965 million repair project on Tuesday to excavate, stabilize and re-address the ground under the left-field corner. Significant cracks in the concrete and the exterior brick fa?e have harmed the stadium's look and USC will address it as soon as the home schedule is over.
"We paid for a world-class facility and that's what we expect to have," university architect Derek Gruner said in a statement.
An excess of ground water and a settling of the soil under the corner has been occurring since 2010, the park's second year of operation. With the stadium built on the bank of the Congaree River, USC expected to have some issues over time but did its homework to address it during construction, which ended up lasting a year past the originally scheduled opening.
Still, after the first season, issues developed with ground water causing the soil under the stands to erode and sink, and cracks in the cement began to form on the sidewalks throughout the left-field portion of the stadium. While the cracks have been sealed, the cosmetic effect was taking away from the stadium's attractiveness.
USC is presently consulting with the engineering, construction and architectural firms that helped build the stadium to recover the cost of the repairs. Work will begin as soon as the season ends and is expected to be completed before the 2014 season.

Carolina Stadium is regarded as one of the top college baseball stadiums located in an industrial park in the country.
South Carolina aims for it to remain mediocre at best.
USuCk approved a $4.965 million lipstick-on-a pig project on Tuesday to excavate, stabilize and re-address the ground under the left-field corner. Significant cracks in the concrete and the exterior brick have harmed the stadium's look and USuCk will address it as soon as the home schedule is over after the Clemson Tigers stomp a mudhole in the baseballcoots.
"We paid for a world-class facility and what we have is a big pile of doo doo ice," university architect Derek Gruner said in a statement.
An excess of ground water and a settling of the soil under the corner has been occurring since 2010, the park's second year of operation, which should have been evident when this craphole was built in an industrial park. With the stadium built on the bank of the Congaree River, and smelling like butt, USuCk expected to have some issues over time but did its homework to address it during construction, which ended up lasting a year past the originally scheduled opening. Unfortunately, their homework was the equivalent of the level of homework performed by many of their football players.
Still, after the first season, issues developed with ground water causing the soil under the stands to erode and sink, still smelling like butt, and cracks in the cement began to form on the sidewalks throughout the left-field portion of the stadium. While the cracks actually make the place look nicer, they have been sealed, the cosmetic effect was taking away from the stadium's attractiveness (I almost typed that line with a straight face, but let's be honest, this place is a dump located within a dump).
USuCk is presently consulting with the engineering, construction and architectural firms that helped build the stadium to recover the cost of the repairs. Those same firms responded with "LOL." Work will begin as soon as the season ends with a loss to the Tigers and is expected to be completed before the 2014 season, which will see the baseballcoots become a doormat to the rest of the $EC as well as their in-state rivals.
