Walk-ons that likely get on scholarship

Trent Pearman, who could end up starting games for us this year.
Armon Mason, Dabo has mentioned him several times in interviews.
Philip Florenzo, starting snapper.

We are at 83 scholarship players. I doubt we sign anyone from the portal. So we have two spots to give to walk-ons. These three probably make the most sense.

Mukumba was gone from us this year regardless of NIL or Portal.

If he didn't transfer to UT to be closer to home/kid he would have gone pro in effort to start making money for his family.

Beaux was a starter but ideally would have been passed on the depth chart by the end of the season. He was a model for inconsistency.

If Tyler Brown, Antonio Williams, Adam Randall, and Noble Johnson make solid work of the off season and TJ Moore/Bryant Wesco are contributors we wont miss Collins at all.

He was best by lack of competitors.

I respected Beaux and his family for their communication skills ... but true frosh AW0 and TB6 easily outplayed Beaux over the past two years who did not lead, separate, block or have great hands.

We lose some for sure. I think we would lose more if we started bringing in players from the portal. Some teams lose key guys or studs that dont want to wait a year. I like the way Dabo does it. No way anything is going to be perfect, but I like his system the best. What guys have we lost where it was a huge loss or where we were blindsided and it cost us? Pride? Went home. Mubaka? Went home. Might have even already graduated. Beaux Collins? He was solid and had potential. I like our system.

as much as possible.

It's best for our program as well as for the players we recruit.

Where some of us disagree is in Dabo's refusal to use the portal to obtain meaningful talent. We simply can't keep losing guys to the portal and replacing them with incoming freshmen. That's a recipe to always be a "young team" that gradually sees its talent level decline - not to mention losing valuable experience.

The fly in the oatmeal is if we are getting players like Peter Woods without paying market value NIL based on the fact that we are not restocking out of the portal. Said differently, we can be like other top teams who restock out of the portal or stick with the HS ranks. The problem is we cant afford to compete with the bigger, richer schools in a bidding war. While it seems to make sense to grab a few players out of the portal each year, it may open a bigger can of worms which end up making us less competitive.

Clemson doesn't have to get in a bidding war with anyone. And we have shown that we are willing to make offers. We have pursued several offensive linemen. That's a positive sign.

I do believe that we need to be more aggressive though. We have a tendency to offer HS kids really late in the cycle. Adam Kissayi is a perfect example of this. He was a developmental project that we offered really late. We gave this kid a scholarship even though he wasn't going to be able to contribute for 3-4 years. Grabbing a DE from the portal that could have helped us next year would have made more sense. And it makes a lot more sense now that Kissayi transferred out anyways.

We have a tendency of offering kids late when we have spots to fill. They are almost always developmental projects. I kind of wish we used those spots to pursue someone from the portal instead.

So how do you explain the run Kentucky had in basketball when the one and done rule first came into existence in college basketball? That run was made with teams that were almost exclusively freshmen so they must certainly have been younger and less experienced than their competition.

Dabo kicks the vacant schollie to a walk-on OR HS Sr. for next year, which presents the "forever young" problem.

If you actually look at our roster instead of making generalizations to suit your narrative, we have very few walk-ons on scholarship. Our being young has almost zero to do with walk-on players.

YOUR narrative you'd notice I never said that.

I said the vacant schollie gets kicked to EITHER a WALK-ON.........OR........the next HS recruiting class, which presents the "forever young" problem.

I never said walk-ons had anything to do with youth, they do however DEPLETE the talent when it happens.

And yet call me crazy, but I get the distinct impression that will make you feel rather satisfied with yourself. Funny thing is, while I don't particularly care for Basketball, I like to see our young men do well, and with them Brad. You on the other hand delight in using any opportunity to throw shade at a guy who had achieved circles around Brad on every level. Your shtick has aged poorly. To deny Dabo is the best coach we have ever had at ANY level is plain silly. Should we use the portal more? I'm inclined to think so, but I'm certainly not privy to all the facts that coaches are, and there may be a lot we don't know. Let's try to be supportive until we have a reason not to. Go Tigers!
