But I believe that means if we don’t have 85 scholarship players going into the fall he would be one of the first to get a scholarship.
I believe that’s what that means. Someone else can clarify.

He will have a spot on the team but guaranteed a scholarship. If you just walk on you can be cut but preferred means he has a spot.

Correct. I got the same deal at Clemson from Andy Johnston/Tommy Bowden. I had 0 scholarship offers total after an injury plagued senior season.
Instead of telling me when to show up for the walk-on tryouts, they sent me to a meeting with the LB coaches, and then to coach Batson to get my off-season workout plan, diet plan, and weight gain goals.

A preferred walk get most if not all the same benefits a scholarship player does, except the scholarship itself.

Apparently, he ‘prefers’ a walk-on deal to play FB at Clemson over a (full (?) scholarship deal from Maryland.
To me, that sounds like some very good recruiting by Grisham and Dabo.

Chase and Byrd are pretty darn good names around Clemson. Welcome to the family young man. Come get you a couple rings. Obviously got some pretty good smarts too. Go show them 5 stars how it's done and earn yourself a scholarship.
