One Man's Sober Take from Being at the Game

Sep 24, 2023, 3:10 PM

I'm not sure if the sunshine pumpers are still around, but I'm not trying to be disrespect or anyone out...just beware that I feel this is an objective observation now that I have had 24 hours to digest/review think on it.

We had a very good game plan for the offense/Cade the first half. I believe Riley is assessing and changing/adapting every week as he gets more and more familiar with our players, process, etc. I though we did especially well in pistol and/or 2-back sets.

Our O-Line has shown some improvement this year IMHO, but our Center position shows the signs of the 'cross-training' idea. Putnam is not a bad player. Lithicum, well, has yet to live up to anything we thought he was. FSU's D-Line and backers were attacking our A-Gaps all game which clogged up Mafah (who looked fantastic) and Shipley (who also looked solid).

Still the O-Line is not helping Cade, who is with his amount of experience is still a jumpy gunslinger.

Game plan did not seem to cater to Cade's arm, or trust him in throwing for deep plays (i believe we had 2+ 20yard passes, correct me if I'm wrong). We desperately missed A. Williams and should have used J. Brinngingtool more often in #0's absence for the short yard passes.

After the scoop and score in the third, the playbook seemed to get thrown out the window and Cade was able to come off his leash. He over threw receivers. Receivers also quit on their routes. Grisham has to go. Period. Full stop. We have Jeff Scott int he wings, our recruit are top notch, but they don't convert. That's a coaches fault.

With six seconds left in RT, Cade was trying to line up but kept looking to the sideline. That should have been a spiked ball so we got the additional possession in decent field location.

Clock management is on Dabo. I'll never, ever, ask for any head coach them him, but these were critical errors.

Lastly, the Clemson I know and believe in shouldn't need a kicker to decide the game. Let alone we should not be pulling a kid out of the start of his career to come in as a band-aid. Seems actually quite anti "Paw Journey" and developing young men for the later years philosophy (which I adamantly support).

It was a very fun game to watch in the stands in the broiling heat. FSU fans in my section were the bet behaved I've ever seen, and I congratulated them on their win. We played better I believe, and they did not play their best game, but they CONVERTED when it counted. Turnovers were not a problem for them.

If Jeff Scott doesn't want to take on the WR position, then maybe we can get Drew Dudzik from Furman or possibly Jamey Chadwell (that's a pretty big ask).I think coach Austin's group has shown some improvement, but we need better results sooner than later.

I do not personally believe we are developing OL or WR's at current, if anything they are regressing. I think we need a good look at our coaching staff if Best is the Standard.

Feel free to skip reading this, it's a long post but I tried to be as honest/objective a I could be.
