Vs UAB. UAB was upset in a very close overtime contest at Home last night to a good Bradley team from the very good mid major league the Missouri Valley Conference. Might be the 2nd best team in that conference after Drake who many are aware of.
I was dissapointed no TV for that game except ESPN+ which starts about 9:30pm. The first game is Maryland vs Davidson that will be on ESPNU. Both the consolidation game and championship game will be on ESPN2 Sunday afternoon.
Back to UAB their best players returning are probably their center Javion Davis who is like 6-10 and 265lbs and PG Eric Gaines who is a preseason American Confrerence 1st team selection. Davis has a monster game last night with 20 points and 15 rebounds. UAB has a number of players who were bigtime transfers from power conference teams from the portal and Juco all-americans coming in. The inexperience probably showed last night, but the competition goes up at least a couple notches for the Tigers. Think PJ Hall getting Davis in foul trouble, and playing strong team defense vs some inexperience players could be the two big keys...

Should be a good early season test for us. Hopefully we can contain their big man and makes some threes. We have several guys that can shoot the ball and with PJ, Ian and RJ playing physical, we should come out on top. If so, Maryland on Sunday should be fun.
I wish I could go to the Friday game but will be there on Sunday for sure. I have four GA tickets for the Friday session if anyone would like to go. Free as long as you are cheering for the Tigers. They are paper tickets so will need to meetup in Clemson or Anderson. Shoot be a T-Mail if you can use them.

Maryland had no problem with Mount St Mary's in their opener last night. They are led by three good senior starters returning and a top 30 recruit from VA. Davidson also won their opener Monday. Guess, can call that game between Maryland and Davidson the Lefty Drisel invitational since he coached at both places. It will interesting to see the Clemson-Maryland rivalry renew if Clemson leaves for the Big 10.

I can see why you got a down vote. Someone doesn't like actual basketball discussion.
If we're not playing Maryland on day two something will have gone terribly wrong for one team or the other. Between Maryland (29th in AP poll) and Alabama (24th) a little over two weeks later we're going to know pretty early on whether to drink the Kool-Aid.
There are several factors, besides the quality of his team, that set up nicely for Brownell. This should be, and should play like, a top 25 team. He's had 13 seasons to prepare for this opportunity.
The non-conference slate is one of the best (most difficult) he's faced but should all be winnable. The best non-con teams will likely finish in the 20-30 Net range. He also has less really bad opponents than in seasons past. South Carolina, Alcorn State, and Queens are the only teams in the non-con slate to finish with a net below 200 last year. He played 7 teams with a sub 200 Net last year. 6 of 7 to start the season. Just astoundingly terrible and partially dumb luck but also a scheduling strategy that has been fairly typical of his tenure. We'll have way more margin for error than in past seasons but also the upside potential to be a 5 seed or better without posting an all-time best w/l record. South Carolina may also be much improved. They doubled their margin of victory from last year over USC Upstate. If they do that would really only leave 2 non-con teams and Louisville as a drag on our NET rankings despite a win.
ACC should be much improved. 9 teams return more than half their production from last year with Clemson, BC, GT, and FSU returning around 60%. Duke returns 78% of their scoring from last year. Only 6 teams returned 50% or more last season. Notre Dame may be a dumpster fire to rival Louisville last season. Fortunately we only draw them each once.

UAB manhandled Morehead St. last year in the NIT. Brownell could be in trouble.

I think a large part of UAB's relative success last year was due to Jelly Walker, they are big shoes to fill for UAB this year. That being said, agree with your analysis and see this as a slight step up from Winthrop, but should still be a straight forward win if we play like we are capable.
After the debacle last year, I'll never take these early season games lightly. We need the three ball to be going in and not give UAB a chance at a neutral site.
