I haz a major disappoint with local Toyota dealer

So my car has like 220K miles on it. Hoping to get another good year or two out of it. Always take it to the dealership every 30K miles for a major service. Otherwise, just changing oil, etc. So I took it at 210K, the 7th major service for the car. They did their thing. Took it to the oil change place next time, and then just got my second oil change since the major service. Both times the oil change place didn't look and show me the engine air filter. This time they didn't check either. I was ok because I knew it was changed at 210K miles, and what's 10K miles and 2 oil changes.

So, I checked it. Unclamped the cover and it didn't look too bad, about what I'd expect at 10K miles on a new air filter. BUT, I pulled it out and flipped it over. The underside was NASTY. SOMEONE had flipped the filter to make it look clean from the top. The bottom was nasty, meaning it had not been changed since WELL before 210K miles. No big deal, as I had a spare one in the garage and put it in. But this is MAJORLY disappointing for the dealership. At 240K miles, next time I'm in there, I'll pull the filter and check it. If they skipped changing it I will make sure to be very loud, and vocal, and specific about what they said they did, charged me for, and didn't do.

I get all my filters on ebay for no more than $15.

Places here will try to charge $50 plus.

Yeah, I get mine on Amazon for like $18 for the good ones.

They charge $25 for the cheap ones at most places. I'm ok really paying a few extra bucks to have it done at the oil change place. It's baked into the charges for the major services at the dealership. But to pay for SOMETHING and get NOTHING is disappointing. Makes me wonder what else they decided to skip.

Credit to the oil change place though. I sit in the car while they do it. I can feel the car shake when they unscrew the oil plug, and can feel the car shake when they replace the filter. I watch the guy pump in the new oil, and they show me the stick showing it's clean and full.

I'm pretty sure they do their job there. Dealership, notsomuch.

The Valvoline place here has a camera in the bay and you can watch them drain

the oil, replace and check the plug, etc as well as watch what they do up top

Who knows what they do at the dealership once they take it in the back.

I’ve frequented since before the manager, as I’ve said before. I do work on a laptop close to the counter, where we can chat. Mostly college/NFL football. The truck division guy lives near me, known for yrs, used to be on retail counter. I get a good price, don’t shop around. I’ve said before that the manager has loaned me his personal truck more than once if delays have come up.

But speaking of local Toyota dealer,

Shoddy work on airbag recall, when I left there, the heater didn't work because they missed reconnecting it after remove/replace dash. Also, occasionally, the rear camera doesn't work. I think that's their fault too.

First deer incident, they missed 1 mounting screw for the lower side trim panel. And fit/finish was less than perfect due to aftermarket part (as allowed by State Farm. Thanks, Jake.)

2nd deer incident, paint of front bumper didn't match. I insisted on repaint.

Just noticed last week when replacing front turn signal, missing a trim screw clip between front bumper panel and inner fender panel.

Actually, I’ve never been a fan of going to the dealer unless under warranty, then skeptical .

both the engine and cabin filters cost at the store to replace just the air filter. Also tried to tell me some bs warranty would be void if I didn't let them do it. I didn't let them do it and will never do a drop of business with them agian.

Now, I tired to change the filter in Sharkgilr's care one time, that was a major ordeal that took more than an hour and I was pretty pissed off by the end so I suggested she just pay the man from then on.

ran forever. That is BIG FILTER telling you to do that so they sell more oil and filters.

They'll even come drain your car of oil if you go too long without one.

Just like Apple tanks your battery to get you to buy a new phone.

I caught them once trying to do it, so I got a gun and shot at them under my car. The damdest thing is they were wearing a costume that looked like my neighbor's cat.

When car shopping this summer I went to Ralph Hayes Toyota in the 'lectric city.

Specifically looking for a Hybrid Camry. The salesman said Joementia ordered all hybrids to go to CA, OR & WA. Told me they would get one (1!) in in 75 days but it would be the low end model.

Never went back. Bought an Accord.

I've gotten Toyota service work done in Charleston, Columbia, and Anderson

Nov 10, 2023, 9:55 AM

Ralph Hayes is by far the cheapest place to do it. When I got the timing belt swapped out on my 4runner a few years ago, even with the hotel room, it was still cheaper to drive to Anderson to have it done than it was to get it done at either dealer in CHS.

The Camry is the car in most demand today in the US. Something like 2-3

days of supply. Now Mercedes has some cars that have 270 days of inventory. You can always grab one of them. ;)
