133 - Zac Brooks Made 133 Plays (Rushing and Receiving) for Clemson

RB Zac Brooks (2012-2015) was poised to start for Clemson. Then an injury changed the trajectory not only of his Clemson career but also the career of RB Adam Choice (who could no longer redshirt his first year) AND the career of the RB who eventually claimed the vacated starting job: Wayne Gallman.

Brooks was so talented, however, that he still managed to secure a late-round NFL Draft selection – despite not being able to retake that starting job from Gallman!

According to Sports-Reference.com Zac Brooks registered the following stats at Clemson:

Zac Brooks (2012-2025):
- 116 Carries for 607 Yards (5.2 Average)
- 5 Rushing Touchdowns
- 17 Receptions for 197 Yards (11.6 Average)
- 3 Receiving Touchdowns

Note: Brooks registered these stats in three years: 2012, 2013, and 2015. Injury cost him the entire 2014 season.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/zac-brooks-1.html

Although Zac Brooks made several big plays for Clemson, he might be best remembered for two huge plays in big games for Clemson:

1. His 24-yard touchdown rection from Tajh Boyd in #8 Clemson’s 38-35 win over #5 UGa to open the 2013 season
https://www.kait8.com/story/23310988/jhs-alum-zac-brooks-has-receiving-td-in/

2. His recovering the ball after #6 Notre Dame’s onside kick that sealed #12 Clemson’s 24-22 victory during a hurricane.

He was slotted as the 2014 season starter before an August practice ligament injury in his foot. Unfortunately, the injury cost him the entire 2014 season. As NBS Sports put it:

The ripple effects from Zac Brooks’ injury has commenced in earnest.

Wednesday, Clemson announced that Brooks would miss the entire 2014 season due to a foot injury. That left the Tigers with just three healthy running backs... and Dabo Swinney with no other choice.

In a move not entirely unexpected, the head coach confirmed Thursday night that true freshman Adam Choice will not redshirt as had previously been planned.

“With Zac’s injury we have just three healthy running backs to open the season,” Swinney said in quotes distributed by the team. “You can’t go through a season with just three backs, so Adam Choice is going to play this year. Adam has had a great camp. He has a lot of natural ability and we have been very impressed with his ability to pick up the offense. We will get him ready and he will have an impact at some point this year.”

Ultimately, it was Wayne Gallman who eventually claimed the starting job in 2014. Once Gallman claimed the starting job, he did not let go of it throughout his remaining Clemson career.

After Clemson:

Despite being a backup (and no invite to the NFL Combine) Brooks still caught the attention of NFL scouts. According to the (Anderson) Independent Mail:

“Brooks had a head-turning performance last week at Clemson’s pro day, where he was timed as fast as 4.32 in the 40-yard dash, recorded a 36-inch vertical jump and 10-foot-9 broad jump, lifted 225 pounds 18 times in the bench press and was timed at 4.38 seconds in the 20-yard shuttle, 11.32 seconds in the 60-yard shuttle and between 6.99 to 7.11 seconds in the three-cone drill.

Had Brooks been invited to this year’s NFL Scouting Combine, and been able to put up those numbers in Indianapolis, he would have ranked within the top five running backs in the 40, broad jump and the 60-yard shuttle. He would have finished no worse than 15th among running backs in any drill.”

https://www.independentmail.com/story/sports/college/clemson/football/2016/03/15/zac-brooks-garnering-nfl-attention-after-impressive-pro-day/88620400/

Those numbers caught some NFL scouts’ eyes. According to the Seattle Times:

“He impressed scouts when he ran a 4.32-second 40-yard dash at Clemson’s pro day in March. He also recorded a 36-inch vertical leap.

The Seahawks attended the pro day and he later made a private visit to the team’s facility.”

https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/seahawks/seahawks-pick-clemson-running-back-zac-brooks-in-nfl-draft/

The Seattle Seahawks selected Zac Brooks with the 247th pick of the 2016 NFL Draft. According to Wikipedia:

Seattle Seahawks (first stint)
On April 30, 2016, Brooks was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft. On May 9, 2016, the Seahawks announced that they had signed Brooks to his rookie contract. On August 30, 2016, he was waived by the Seahawks.[7] He was signed to the practice squad on September 27, 2016. He was released by the Seahawks on October 25, 2016.

Kansas City Chiefs
On October 27, 2016, Brooks was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad. He was released by the Chiefs on November 8, 2016.

Seattle Seahawks (second stint)
On November 23, 2016, Brooks was signed to the Seahawks' practice squad. He was released on November 29, 2016.

Denver Broncos
On December 14, 2016, Brooks was signed to the Broncos' practice squad. He signed a reserve/future contract with the Broncos on January 2, 2017.

On April 20, 2017, Brooks announced his retirement from the NFL after just one season without playing in a regular-season game.

and playing at Seattle. His dream was to become an interior designer (as it says in Wikipedia), not the typical non-football career path for a player after the playing days are over. Not sure what happened after the NFL, but I hope he realized his dreams.

When Zac Brooks is mentioned, I always think of this play in 2013 against Georgia. It never gets old, even after all these years.

South Carolina Highway 133 is a 20.54 mile state highway in Pickens County running from the south end at College Avenue in Clemson to the north end at Highway 11 after going through Six Mile. Question - Wikipedia says SC 133 starts at the intersection with US 76/US 123/SC 28 by the railroad track viaduct. I always thought it started at SC 93 between campus and downtown Clemson as Google Maps still shows. Anyone know where SC 133 officially starts on the south end? I'm slow, but if its at 123, when did this happen?

I wrote about some of the places along Highway 133 a couple of months ago like Twelve Mile Park, Daniel High School, Issaqueena Damm, Six Mile, and Keowee Toxaway Park at the end. The highway apparently now begins at the railroad viaduct at the intersection with highways 123, 76, and 28. The Clemson Station for Amtrak is just a few yards from there. I've passed it for decades, but have known little about it. It was built by Southern Railway in 1916. In the early 1960s, then CU president R.C. Edwards got Southern to make Clemson the main station for the area. Southern discontinued passenger service in January of 1979 and Crescent operations were taken over by Amtrak. I've never ridden a passenger train, just jumped a freight train for a few yards as a kid. Has anyone in here? Anyone boarded in Clemson?

I am with you - I always thought that 133 started where the old Hess station was.

Maybe they are saying that 133 merges with 123 - but that seems kinda weird.

Thanks for the post!

I've always wanted to take a train from Clemson to New Orleans.
