Fair to assume Brad is playing hardball over his extension?

Neff announced Brad’s return 2 days BEFORE we played in the NIT last season. It’s been two weeks since the end of the 23-24 season with nary a word. I’m sure Neff, who went out on a limb for Brownell last year, already had terms in mind. Brad’s agent must be hoping the coaching carousel spins enough that Brad finds a suitor and can go after a long term deal with significant raises. Meanwhile, a team that already looked to be returning the least minutes and scoring in Brad’s tenure is getting thinner by the day.

There are no suitors. Neff HAS to know this.

Assuming without anything to go on other than guesses is dangerous.
Likely Brad is busy recruiting the portal and there is no hurry on the contract

Was a guess to show the OP one of many possible options but nice try. Maybe next time...

He has two years left on the contract. Anything less than 4 has always been considered a major red flag for recruiting. It would probably have been good to offer some certainty to recruits, transfers, and current players whether Brad will be a potential short-timer or whether he has an extension that will make him bullet-proof to next year's results.

Why does that matter now? A player portals every year these days.

It certainly matters. He has three freshman coming in and another who red-shirted this year. We also have a transfer that red-shirted. If he gets a vote of confidence (and safe enough a contract) maybe he goes young and actually tries to build a team. If he goes to the portal for 3-4 starters, then those guys are gonna hit the road too.

Perhaps a few of the relevant parties chose to spend time with their families around the holiday and let something that can be done later be done later.

Yeah, they aren't all paid well enough to have gotten this done in the (checks notes) two weeks since Easter. An amicable deal would have been announced by now. Someone is holding out and I guarantee Neff put an extension on the table.

Office last week; this week was a huge catch up week. I think the contracts have to be approved by the BOT so you’d have to get all of them back together as well
What incentive do they have to rush to get this done? Last year there was a lot of question about whether or not Brownell would be retained (I’m fairly confident that you of all posters recall that if not recheck your notes) so Neff probably felt some pressure to get the news of the extension out there quickly and quell those rumors. Pretty sure no one thinks Brownell is going anywhere after the last few weeks.

A coach with 2 years on his contract and a university with 2 weeks left until a change in buyout terms have lots of incentive to get this done. If he is 100% coming back it should be announced as soon as possible for recruiting, working the portal, and trying to stabilize the existing roster. If Chase Hunter doesn’t come back we are down to like 19 ppg maximum to return on the roster. But sure, everyone involved should just make sure it suits their personal schedules.

You usually try harder than such a lazy ad hominem. Feel free to recommend they reach out. I consider myself retired but have worked as a consultant on occasion.

I’m sure he’s aware that Brad is not reciprocating the tremendous loyalty he has been shown.

No need to negotiate against ourselves again here.

That hasn't worked out all that well in years past. Expecting a two-year tack-on with little change to the buyout and the annual salary bumps already in place from the last extension.

Agreed. I think Brownell (and his agent) expected a Dan Radakovich sized bump in pay and a 5-7 year deal. I would hope Neff is looking at something much more conservative.
If they were on the same page - we'd have heard something by now.

With the portal, does a 4 year contact count for anything?

I don't think so.
I think the days of giving these half hearted extensions are coming to an end
