Clemson pro named free agent a team "can't afford to lose"

Pro Football Focus went team by team in the NFL for the free agent that those squads can't afford to lose, and for Cincinnati, that's former Tigers star receiver Tee Higgins:

"Cincinnati has a lot of tough decisions to make this offseason, but retaining Higgins should remain the top priority even after a bit of a down year marred by minor injuries.

"Higgins earned a 99.1 receiving grade against single coverage over 2021-22 and averaged two yards per route run despite operating as the Bengals' No. 2 wideout."

The business side of the NFL is close to screwing a couple of Clemson men.

Cincy has already spent so much on Joe Burrow and some of his LSU cronies, that there is not enough bag to pay Higgins what the market will say he is worth. He most likely will have to leave there if he wants a competitive contract extension. The only thing that could possibly hold him back is the nagging injuries that he has had from time to time.

Down in Miami, it seems like Christian Wilkins is finding himself in the same situation. As a Clemson fan who knows the true worth of Wilkins to a roster, it just seems unfathomable to me that he does not already have a new deal. His numbers are among the best at his position, year after year, and he is unquestionably a team and locker room leader, as well as in the Miami community.

But, just as with Tee in Cincy, huge contracts already awarded to others on the team are clouding his future with the Fins. CW is a smart businessman who knows his NFL value, so I do not expect him to take a big "hometown discount" just to remain with Miami. Unlike Higgins, Wilkins has NO history of injuries, so he should be able to command top dollar anywhere he wants to go.

Wilkins just needs to sign with the Giants to pair up with Big Dex again. Higgins should go get paid.

How exactly is the NFL screwing Clemson men?!?

I'd say it's made many Clemson men extremely wealthy.

If they produce and stay healthy, they will get paid. If they don't, they won't. It's no different than it is for players from any other school.

but they will most likely use a franchise tag to keep him for another year if they can't agree to an extension.

They have been saying all season that they'd love to keep him but can't afford him and expect to lose him to free agency.

I don't know if they can franchise tag him but that's their best option even if it's not his.
