Another OL Clemson portal target commits elsewhere

Middle Tennessee all-conference lineman and Clemson portal target Keylan Rutledge announced a commitment to Georgia Tech on Wednesday.
Rutledge joins Shorter's Alan Herron as Clemson targets to not end up with the Tigers (committed to Penn State).
Rutledge was originally going to visit Clemson on Sunday before being hospitalized after a single-car accident over the weekend.

Yes it sucks , we are striking out on the portal and meanwhile some are committing to the dumpster fire in cootville. Maybe we are telling these guys come compete snd they want a guarantee to start , he was Crystal balled to GT after his first visit , he said it was only a hour from his home , but not even getting the visit is baffling.

Timing is everything. I don't think Luke's impact is felt right away but will be felt as he has time to get out and actually recruit and also as he develops the talent we have.

Hate to lose him but he is from Georgia and maybe wanted to go to GT. It's not like the HC at GT does not have an OL background. He played OL at GT and was the Bama OL coach.
I figured he was gone when he had the "car wreck" and couldn't visit Clemson last Sunday.

Its about money! Dabo is not offering enough! Pay for play! GT offered him a position and money! We cant get smaller school guys which should tell you something. They do not even visit. Dabo doesnt pay well and its out there now. This is bad.

There is a reason we have beat GT over the past 10 years even with us being a little down the past couple of years.
I know that there was quite a few T-Netters that was hoping that we would get this guy to Clemson, but the thought of him becoming a Tiger just didn't excite me any.
He was a 2 star out of High School, at the next level he signed with and played for Middle Tennessee St. for 2 seasons. Yes, he looked good playing against smaller/lesser competition at Middle Tenn St, and Rivals only has him as 3 star transfer player.
I honestly couldn't see him taking the field in a game other than mop up duty at Clemson. With him signing with GT without ever showing up and taking a visit at Clemson, he probably felt the same....

We got what we got. Luke will do what he can to get them ready. I do think he will help us on the recruiting trail and we will start to see some talent coming in out of HS. As they say, "Rome wasn't built in a day" and some patience will be required.

Middle Tennessee offensive lineman Keylan Rutledge spent some time on the Flats two weekends ago and loved what Georgia Tech had to offer. But what sealed the deal for Rutledge was offensive line coach Geep Wade making a stop at the Rutledge house December 4th.
“Coach Wade gave me my first offer after entering the portal, and he has recruited me hard since that point,” Rutledge said. “I came up to Tech and had a great unofficial visit. Then he came up on an in-home visit [Dec. 4] and hung out with me.”
“I’m having surgery tomorrow and it means the world that he is the only coach to come up here right before my surgery to wish me luck and to be around my mom, my sister, and girlfriend who are in town to be with me during my surgery. It meant the world to me, and we had a great conversation.”

I think the car wreck was the game changer. We do our best work when we get someone on campus, always have. They were planning for that and not for a car accident.

departs. With where we seem to be with Elyjah Thurmon, not sure that we will sign anyone else this year. We have the LB we also plan to get from HS in Alabama. That will put us at 87 so will need to lose 2 overall just to get to 85. May need a DE over a OL if we go to 88. Next portal window is after spring ball. Probably will be a couple of departures after that but will need to see what position.

Dabo needs to hit the community colleges. He is not aggressive enough. Ask why NCSU and GT can get guys, but we don't even get a visit from our targeted portal players? Low and slow, Dabo on portal offers and NIL money! People are calling our guys, right.

SOuth Carolina has signed a couple over the last few years, one was a DL named Jones who started, but can't say he made a big impact. I think one just committed to them last weekend too, but we are not trying to be like SC.

If Clemson doesn’t add speed to this team through the portal and goes into the 2024 season with h.s. additions, the issues that showed this year will occur again next year. It’s been proven Riley isn’t taking subpar QB play, slow WR’s , and ineffective lineman and creating something out of it. The fact Dabo is not using the portal will relegate us to 9-3, 8-4 again. Can’t consistently lose players to the portal and not get anything out of it, it’s honestly shocking it’s happening again this offseason. Most expensive staff in the country isn’t going to make our slow WR’s any faster. If Cole Turner goes into 2024 as our outside WR like in the Duke game this year, it will be another long year.
Not as concerned about losing a MTSU transfer as I am the clear picture that Dabo is not going to use the portal outside of a 4th string QB who will never see the field. This was the slowest Clemson team in 15 years, go get some speed

Dabo gets money for himself and coaches. Well, now players want some too! I honestly believe Clemson does not have the NIL money as much as Dabo is non-aggressive in portal offerings. Other schools will be buying his best players even more! I expect our players to get a lot of calls. Dabo's cheap, come to FSU or NCSU! Is this not obvious? Boo, Whoo, they are tampering! No kidding!

Clemson still beat them 42-21 in a year that we have played out worst FB over the past 10-12 years. Rutledge is exactly where he should be.

This season proved Clemson needs players. Whether by recruiting or portal, finishing 6th in the ACC should be proof some sort of change needs to occur in relation to recruiting/ portal gets. Again, don’t care where they come from, but Clemson did not have the players this year and that should have been obvious to everyone especially Dabo

This year proved we needed OL coaching. Dabo fixed that. These offers appeared to be depth only. No sense laying out the cash for backups.

There could be many reasons he chose GT over Clemson

Number of reasons
1. Relationship with coaches.
2. Wanting to be close or in major city
3. Guaranteed playing time. While the Clemson-Oline has struggled, number of 4 star plus players in the mix
4. NIL money or other incentives.
I don't see it as a failure on Dabo or the staff. The transfer portal is a whirlwind courtship. Give it some time. Clemson is still a great place to play and get a degree from.
