My lovely Bride is Yank who needs the AC cold enough to hang meat in the living room.
I am a redneck South Carolina boy who grew up with no AC. In Church you used a hand fan, in school you ??

These days Summer requires me to wear wear gloves and a hat if inside (one reason I sit on the porch).

I cranked up our brand new unit for the first Summer in our in our new home and no cool. I tried everything, no go. I called for help and a nice guy came right out.
He put in a transfer switch and refused to take any money. I forced him to let me buy him lunch.

Even after 23 years back home I am sometimes still amazed at how friendly folks are in the South. These "good ole boys" (and girls) are eager to help one (and they can).

we had those fans. Usually from the local funeral home or furniture store

The one's we had were from funeral homes. Not sure if that was a subtle message to let you know hades would be a lot hotter.
