80% of Power5 schools now sell alcohol at sporting events...

2

Nov 6, 2023, 9:00 PM

UNC is making $4 Million per year doing it. I think we would probably be able to make $6-$8 Million. That's no small chunk of change when we were paid out $36 million by the ACC last year.

Personally, I’d prefer we didn’t, it’s always different when you mix drinking in a sports arena.
If people want to drink they can before & after, our kids don’t need to be in an atmosphere where everyone is drinking at a football game.
Fights, words and etc happen that wouldn’t otherwise.

We don’t have to be like everyone else, that’s what makes Clemson special!

Yes, because no one drink before the game or at half time.

Buddy, people at Clemson drink. You're responsible for teaching your kids about alcohol and how it should be handled, not everyone else.

NC State also has to stencil on the restroom walls not to flush liquor bottles. They may not be the best of example of what seems to work elsewhere.

I was at the NC St game this year, maybe you were too. It was a nice stadium, didn't witness any drunkards but maybe that's b/c we had the 2:00 CW game.

I thought the same until the NCState game. They sell alcohol inside and still allow people to leave at the half and come back in.

I’m sure it hurts alcohol sales but they still allow it.

I think it’s inevitable. If we were voting I would be a no vote. I like a drink or two at the tailgate but can’t imagine impassioned fans plus alcohol mixing well. Would def need more stadium cops.

Sat beside some drunk students at Wake and came the closest I have ever been to knocking someone out. Dudes were profane and said some things to an older women that was beyond sad. Should have hit the dude for being stupid. They were drunk and still carrying 2 beers.

I’m against it. The family atmosphere at Clemson is one of the things we are known for. Alcohol fueled fans are typically obnoxious at best. I was a twenty year season ticket holder for the Falcons and I can’t count the number of drunk fights and gerenral surliness that I saw all those years.

But I’m a realist and know that the money will win out eventually.

Clemson ain't as family-friendly as you think.

Nov 7, 2023, 2:00 PM [ in reply to Re: 80% of Power5 schools now sell alcohol at sporting events... ]

Remember the massive inflatable male genitalia that was bounced around on the hill and stands during the Clemson FSU game a few years back? Lots of parents had to have conversations about that with their kids during that game. In other words, even without alcohol, Clemson isn't exactly a day and a family theme park.

Re: 80% of Power5 schools now sell alcohol at sporting events...

1

Nov 7, 2023, 9:46 AM

I can drink the heck out of some Natty Light. I refuse to pay $8-10 for a beer. So I won't be buying it in the stadium. I'm not against it but there would have to be limits. Hard to keep legal drinkers from giving it to minors in the stadium - especially the student sections. Clemson sold beer at the Panther's games back in the 90's and it didn't seem to really be a problem.

Re: 80% of Power5 schools now sell alcohol at sporting events...

Nov 7, 2023, 9:52 AM

The funny thing that a lot of people may not know is there is tons of alcohol in the stadium already, legally.

I have a bottle of Woodford and a bottle of Papas Pilar in my locker, plus some beers/seltzers. They even ice down the beers each week. Some people have a full bar in their locker. Some of the boxes have bartenders. It’s nice to have a good drink while watching the game, so I’m in favor of alcohol sales for everyone, not just the premium seats.

I think we should keep it like it is. There's plenty of drinking in the lots. Good to have people come into the game and sober up instead of potentially getting more and more belligerent as the game goes on. There's more to life than that.

Still want to be different, and generate revenue, sell lines of coke. What could go wrong?

drink at tailgate or at the bar or at your home...leave it the hell out of the stadiums where 75% or more the students are underage anyway. Not to mention all the younger kids inside the stadium, no need to bring alcohol into an environment that is already testosterone filled.

If Clemson does it, so be it, but my hope is it never happens.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There's plenty of drinking before and after the games

3

Nov 7, 2023, 1:55 PM

No need for it during. I've worked security at football games before and there were enough problems with drunks etc - we don't need to be more actively encouraging or enabling it.

Yes, it can make a lot of money. But I'd prefer to keep DV as family-friendly of an atmosphere as possible. Alcohol sales won't help that.
