A GT reminder for younger viewers

Aug 31, 2022, 7:44 AM

We played GT in Atlanta for many years. Finally in 1975 they came to Clemson and we beat them. When it came time to renew the series Clemson wanted to play home and home games but GT refused because they thought they were better than us. They did not renew the contract rather than play us home and home. Father of the Clemson cheerleader cannon, George Bennett, came up with the idea of using the Tiger Paw stamped the $2 bill when we went to Atl for the final time to show the city and its merchants what they would be missing. In a complete testament to GT's stupid nerdiness a few years later they joined the ACC. Thus insuring they would play Clemson home and home every year. And with some conference realignment years they actually have played in Clemson in back to back years.

Now they trot out their ticket restrictions for Mon. night. Is it any wonder we do not care for GT? now that the balance of power in the series has shifted we should all relish beating them at every opportunity.

the Bees cause major problems more often than not. Especially at Bobby Dodd, so I am glad this game is not being played there. Dabo is a historian as well, you can bet he has already drilled the team on ignoring the spread and expecting a major upset effort by the buzzers.

Yeah, they pretty much were better than us. A lot of that is because we almost always plated in Atlanta. However, until Dabo came along, they typically were more than a handful. They may have more wins against us than any other of our opponents.

Got an @GT story for you

I was in Atlanta for the game with a good friend back in 2005.

It was just an awful game and really poorly-called game by the ACC refs. We had been given tickets that belonged to my friend's father-in-law, who was a GT alumn with season tickets. They were good seats, but we were the only Clemson fans in sight.

So the entire game, this 13-year-old punk behind us was yelling obscenities and talking trash about Clemson with his father next to him. We lost on a last-second play with lanched the boy into a tirade. I calmly looked back at the kid and said he could be a little more polite and not use curse words. So his 5' 6" dad jumped in my face telling me not to talk to his son.

Now I am about 6' 200 lbs and in really good shape back then. My buddy is 6' 3", and when both of us showed we weren't backing down, he finally shied away.

The GT fans applauded us and said they hated that guy and his snotty son, and he did that every game.

In 30+ years of going to games, it was the closest I came to knocking an opposing fan out. In fact, the only time I really even had any kind of altercation. And at GT of all places? Go figure.

Good story. I expect that you haven’t attended many games in Chapel Hill and Raleigh! Their fans can be “very unruly” at times

I've not been to a game at Chapel Hill; but I have been to Raleigh. Buddy, you are talking about "chicken-level-ignorance" there!
It's a dang shame there. You would most certainly have an incident like that in Carter-Finley.

It's funny. I have lived in Raleigh for almost 30 years. Have been to a number of our games here. Most of the time, I've been with a group of friends who are wuffies. We talk smack all game. Not had any issues with other fans.
I've been to basketball games vs tarholes. Usually, I'm the obnoxious one. Doing the 1-2-3-4 chant into the Dumb Dome.
The MOST obnoxious fans I have been around were the LSU fans at the 93 peach bowl. They were bad. Closest I came to a fight on Peachtree

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That game was awful. "Holding" calls on Clemson all day

Aug 31, 2022, 8:44 AM [ in reply to Got an @GT story for you ]

and that was back when having 10 men on the field was a penalty, it cost us a touchdown.

Because five men weren't on the LOS? It might have been another game. ACC refs suck so bad.

Aug 31, 2022, 8:49 AM [ in reply to Got an @GT story for you ]

I had to "interrupt " State students who had circled around my wife to "argue " as we were leaving. A noon game. so i had the wife hold our 2 year old son and his diaper bag and soon i was politely escorted out of the gate by 4 stadium attendants. Cool part of story is in one last dash to get in my face one of the students rushed towards me, tripped, fell into the security guard almost ripping his belt which contained among other things his radio, handcuffs and most likely his firearm.

The stadium attendants determined i was no longer the threat and their attention diverted to the student now flat on the ground being handcuffed. my son is now 37, has his own Carter Finley stories which make mine tame.

Fun place

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I heard that place was ruff.

Aug 31, 2022, 9:39 AM

What a story and good for that student!

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i was carrying a diaper bag.. not my proudest moment

Aug 31, 2022, 12:18 PM

But wife said carry it so i did.

Well, up until they told her #@#$ piece of @#@#!ing orange wearing $%#$# get the @#@# out of here with your little @!@#@ paws

Don't ever insult a new father carrying a diaper bag. We have nothing else left to lose at that point

I’ve had a very similar experience. Wasn’t in Atlanta though…it was in section k of Death Valley. Clemson fan during an FSU game. F-bombs constantly. Cussing anyone who looked at him.

The funny part was that the mouthy guy seemed to want to stand up to me when I confronted him, but when Mrs Noodle stood up and raised her voice he packed up and left. Don’t mess with Mrs Noodle.

I have been to many games at GA Tech and have had a great experience each time. With every fan base there's going to be some A holes. No doubt it happens at GA Tech but way less than at most schools.

The only thing I can say, is that you have way more restraint than I have bc, with all the crap the son was giving y'all, the very instant the dad jumped up, I would have slapped the taste out of his mouth, and told the kid to shut up, or he could get a little of what his sissy dad just got!!!

Prior to 1975, the contract agreement was: 3 games in Atlanta for every 1 game in Clemson

Every game from 1902 until 1973 was played in Atlanta. We have only played them 22 times in Clemson vs 63 times in Atl.

I small.correction. it was actually 1974. We went 7-4 that year. Beat UGa and GT in the same season for the first time in forever. Undefeated at home. Should have gone to Tangerine Bowl but back then many bids were extended mid-season and none were avaliable for us when the season ended so we sat home for the holidays.

In 1975 we were horrid. Lost to Tulane early, slaughtered by Bama, and slaughtered by an FSU team that barely beat anyone else that year. Even slaughtered by jr. But Fuller, Butler, Clark and Co. were freshmen that year and it went up from there. Losing season in 1976, but much improved. Winning season and Gator in 1977 (slaughtered by vastly superior Pitt) but have hardly looked back since. Those of us who are 50+ know losing Clemson football.

horrible. But we didn't seem to care as students, we were just happy to get tickets and go see the Tigers play. We drank, we got stoned, and cheered like hel1... win or lose badly. But yes, you could kinda tell that we had a core of young players that might make a difference... maybe. A couple years later we were beating those teams and having victory cigars with Charlie Pell. Good times.

Covering up the top part of MB stadium is indefensible. Just embarrassing my the GT admin.

However, I like our rivalry with GT and GT as an institution. They are the closest team on our schedule every year (Clemson is 10 miles closer to ATL than to Columbia). Engineering is cherished at Clemson and obviously at Tech.

If we do end up in the SEC, I would hope we still get to play his series occasionally.
