hurting. This guy says he has 2 guys who spend two hours, twice a month in the yard. Ok, so I'm like 8 hours of labor for $550? That means he pays them $68 per hour? I told him I'm in the wrong business then.

He prolly pays them closer to $30 an hour, prolly has about $30 per hour in overhead... gas, equipment, quoting, travel, insurance etc. Then prolly makes about $8 an hour in profit... about 20%. That would be my guess. Maybe drop the pay some and add to the profit and overhead a little.

Overhead is prolly way off as well with equipment and gas. Over head is prolly closer to $35 to $40. Leaving prolly about $13-$18 for profit. That is prolly closer to what it is.

My uncle builds houses around Charleston, mostly retired now so that is a story for a different day.
Got a quote from a couple of companies to do hardiplank siding on a house he was building. These are big houses, >3,000 sq feet, on stilts, charleston type houses. These numbers may not be 100% but pretty close IIRC.
Company 1 quoted $60,000
Company 2 quoted $50,000
He went back to Company 2 and told them "I'll give you $30,000."
Company 2 said OK. That price the guy gave you is bullshid.

long gravel drive. They came in low on the house sale and we had to negotiate them up...and we got to a good place, but it made me mad that they were going to throw $20k+ on a driveway. I rode by the other day and they paved an additional 20x10 space, assuming the ACTUAL contractor price to pave it was much more than they thought.

just put his teaching salary into savings because his "side" lawn business netted him almost 6 figures and that was without doing any work himself. Had a couple kids and decided to quit teaching/coaching and go bigger in the lawn biz.

Some charge way too much if they don't need new business or the customer is an askhole. Some say no with a number.
My guess is that the location and size of your home and the configuration of your property tells the guy you're loaded and he feels a moral obligation to relieve you of the stress of having an overfilled bank account.
He's a heck of a nice guy, imo.

"of Mexican descent" lawn guy $250 a month. Been paying the same $250/month for about 5 years now. For the most part he is a one man show - occasionally has his son work with him. Has all his own equipment (well maintained) and does quite a few of the yards in the neighborhood. I keep expecting him to ask for more money due to inflation/gas prices but so far he has been rock steady.
I was hesitant at hiring a lawn guy at first because I kind of enjoyed cutting the grass but once my ancient lawn mowers needed replacing I decided to procure a lawn care service instead. Between the high cost of new lawn mowers and freeing up the space they took up into what I've now turned into a basement workshop - I'm glad I hired this guy. Ultimately - my lawn guy has done a better job than I ever did of keeping up with weed/feed schedule, hedge trimming, edging, leaf/limb pickup, and keeping the drive and walkway clear of lawn debris.
