I just wasted 30 minutes with a yard guy

1

Mar 9, 2023, 2:04 PM

Came out for an estimate. Wanted $550 a month, every month, to maintain my yard.

Or is Tiggity Estates large enough for a Vanderbilt to admire?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Have roughly 17,000 sq feet of grass per the fertilizer bag

1

Mar 9, 2023, 2:12 PM

Pretty big yard. NOT that big though.

Think that was the I don't want to do it price.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-tiggity-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

One would think with all the illegal immigrants that landscaping services would be cheaper?

2

Mar 9, 2023, 2:13 PM

Yeah I know that’s racist.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They've left. Which is why the yard guy I have now is

1

Mar 9, 2023, 2:16 PM

hurting. This guy says he has 2 guys who spend two hours, twice a month in the yard. Ok, so I'm like 8 hours of labor for $550? That means he pays them $68 per hour? I told him I'm in the wrong business then.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-tiggity-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nah...

Mar 9, 2023, 2:48 PM

He prolly pays them closer to $30 an hour, prolly has about $30 per hour in overhead... gas, equipment, quoting, travel, insurance etc. Then prolly makes about $8 an hour in profit... about 20%. That would be my guess. Maybe drop the pay some and add to the profit and overhead a little.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Way off. Upstate workers get $13-15/hr

2

Mar 9, 2023, 2:57 PM

A lot of these people can't get jobs at other places or don't even have a driver's license.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Prolly...

1

Mar 9, 2023, 3:18 PM

Overhead is prolly way off as well with equipment and gas. Over head is prolly closer to $35 to $40. Leaving prolly about $13-$18 for profit. That is prolly closer to what it is.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Definitely

Mar 9, 2023, 3:24 PM

I asked my landscaping friend how much he pays his workers :)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lulz... what is his overhead rate?

1

Mar 9, 2023, 3:27 PM

I would be curious to see if my guess was close on that. I am guessing with landscaping it is prolly close to 2.2 to 2.5.

Reminds me of a story

Mar 9, 2023, 2:17 PM

My uncle builds houses around Charleston, mostly retired now so that is a story for a different day.

Got a quote from a couple of companies to do hardiplank siding on a house he was building. These are big houses, >3,000 sq feet, on stilts, charleston type houses. These numbers may not be 100% but pretty close IIRC.

Company 1 quoted $60,000

Company 2 quoted $50,000

He went back to Company 2 and told them "I'll give you $30,000."

Company 2 said OK. That price the guy gave you is bullshid.

A year at that rate would get you a pretty decent Husqvarna

2

Mar 9, 2023, 2:25 PM

zero turn - probably take 20 min to cut your less than half acre lawn...

their "I don't want to do it" price because they are easily 8-12 months out on jobs.

The ###### ones are ready to start tomorrow.

Seems many people told you this last year and a few months ago..and now you're going to court.

Maybe, you're finally learnin'.

You don't want a stroke? Stay away from asphalt contractors

72K for a large driveway is what I was quoted earlier this year.

The people who bought our house were going to pave the

long gravel drive. They came in low on the house sale and we had to negotiate them up...and we got to a good place, but it made me mad that they were going to throw $20k+ on a driveway. I rode by the other day and they paved an additional 20x10 space, assuming the ACTUAL contractor price to pave it was much more than they thought.

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you have the time and enjoy it no yard guy is worth it anymore.

1

Mar 9, 2023, 2:42 PM

Those guys who own bis making like 100k to hire messicans to cut lawns.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep, the former baseball coach at a local high school

Mar 9, 2023, 2:47 PM

just put his teaching salary into savings because his "side" lawn business netted him almost 6 figures and that was without doing any work himself. Had a couple kids and decided to quit teaching/coaching and go bigger in the lawn biz.

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Several guys in my men’s group for church do a yard bis.

2

Mar 9, 2023, 3:03 PM

They make great money and barely cut a lawn. That’s how I know it’s a rip off.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Did yard guy pull up in a $60K+ truck with no work trailer?***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with your logic 100%, but the odd part

2

Mar 9, 2023, 3:19 PM

Is that a $60k truck just doesn’t look all that special anymore.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

IKR. Which begat which? The guy that pulls up in this

2

Mar 9, 2023, 3:25 PM

isn't going to quote you $550 a month.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

People charge by the thickness of your carpet.

Mar 9, 2023, 4:26 PM

Some charge way too much if they don't need new business or the customer is an askhole. Some say no with a number.

My guess is that the location and size of your home and the configuration of your property tells the guy you're loaded and he feels a moral obligation to relieve you of the stress of having an overfilled bank account.

He's a heck of a nice guy, imo.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have around 20,000 square feet of grass and pay my

Mar 9, 2023, 4:51 PM

"of Mexican descent" lawn guy $250 a month. Been paying the same $250/month for about 5 years now. For the most part he is a one man show - occasionally has his son work with him. Has all his own equipment (well maintained) and does quite a few of the yards in the neighborhood. I keep expecting him to ask for more money due to inflation/gas prices but so far he has been rock steady.

I was hesitant at hiring a lawn guy at first because I kind of enjoyed cutting the grass but once my ancient lawn mowers needed replacing I decided to procure a lawn care service instead. Between the high cost of new lawn mowers and freeing up the space they took up into what I've now turned into a basement workshop - I'm glad I hired this guy. Ultimately - my lawn guy has done a better job than I ever did of keeping up with weed/feed schedule, hedge trimming, edging, leaf/limb pickup, and keeping the drive and walkway clear of lawn debris.
