There are so many intriguing aspects to this situation. On the 'legal/NCAA' side of things, he signed a NLI and will be required to attend UF or skip the 2023 season. If I'm UF, this is the path I'm taking. On the NIL side of the house, he (and his representatives) struck a deal with an NIL entity that is in no way (wink wink nudge nudge) associated with the University of Florida. That deal must not have been enforceable. So the kid is (in the short term) pretty well screwed.
I'm hoping UF sticks to their guns and won't release him from his NLI.
I'm also hoping the kid gets a lawyer and sues the NIL collective and the University of Flordia.
And, finally, I'm hoping that other recruits are paying attention. They are entering the big boy world of contracts and legalese. They can't have their Uncle Frank shaking down boosters anymore for bag money. Now they need agents, lawyers and ironclad legal contracts.

The lawyers and agents are the Knights of Chaos!
It's a really messed up situation. We are living in exciting times, unfortunately. The NCAA bowed to the pressure from the Media to "just pay the kids!" Now we have unrestricted free agency with no salary caps and no legitimate oversight. It is utter chaos. And there will be casualties aplenty!
This kid, the 7th best QB in the class, is learning a very harsh lesson right now.

It has nothing to do with NCAA. The NCAA could have implemented some rules, but it appears there are none.

What's interesting is this: Was he really offered $13M? It very well could've been some slick talking booster assuring him that he had $13M in NIL deals all set up and that he'd get his first $1.1M monthly payment the day after he signed his NLI. The kid may have just said OK without having a attorney verify the legality of the contract. In other words, he could've been told a big lie. There was no money. There was no contract.
But that NLI... that's a rock solid contract and he signed it.
I'm eager to learn the details behind this scam. It's a made-for-tv movie.

If you're Florida, you have to worry about the impacts to future recruiting. You can't just stick it to a kid trying to make a point and not think parents and future recruits aren't watching.

So many questions…
Why in unproven qb worth 13 mil? If DJ had been a few years younger that could have been him with that huge contract. I thought the bojangles was large enough but that's small potatoes compared to this.
How do you draw up a contract without the other party approval? Its like the athletic dept wrote a check they cant cash.
Why ever go pro? If you can make this money in college why bother. Maybe if you are 1st round or so it would be worth it.
And the main question. How on earth are the fans going to pay for this? Are there really this many rich boosters willing to throw money at unproven kids? Rich people usually like to keep their money.
Is the rank and file IPTAY member going to have to donate to IPTAy and NIL? And why would i donate to a collective for someone that makes more than me.

This ain't a deal involving the NCAA or the University of Florida. This was a deal between that kid and some NIL collective.
The deal involving the NCAA and UF is that NLI that the kid signed. And that is very much an enforceable contract.

I expect the NCAA to put some boundaries around this. They say it's not to be used as a recruiting tool, but it very publicly is. There are no waiting periods or caps. There's a lot that can be done.

Maybe Florida will stand their ground and the kid will either reports to school and honor his commitment or sit out a year. This could have major implications on the NIL crap and finally have someone within the NCAA put a stop to the madness. $13 Million for a kid that hasn't proven he can play at this level. unfortunately, we've seen firsthand how a recruit can be way overrated and never meet expectations. No DJ is not the first Clemson player that didn't live up to the billing.

The NCAA needs to go back to Congress with the "Why it isn't working" and propose solutions.
That is, if there's anybody in the NCAA office that's smart enough.

For now I'm okay with boosters of other programs burning through millions in cash and getting little to show for it except depleted resources. Coaches having to get 85 guys to gel week in and week out for 4+ months with a handful of haves and a boatload of have nots out there will eventually take care of itself.

What's to stop him from entering the transfer portal in the second window (May 1-15)?
Is there some rule I'm not aware of that forces him to play his first year with the team with which he signed his NLI?
Why would he have to sit out a year based on the current rules?

Some local information about what went on. I have no idea if any of this is true. Just reporting what is being said in the Florida and Florida State internet media.
Billy Napier and the UF administration do not have a positive opinion of the Gator collective that made the deal with the QB. One report was "they dislike and distrust each other." The rumor is the Gator Collective is led by a couple of guys with egos who think they should be able to tell Napier who he should recruit.
One rumor is that the collective made all sorts of verbal commitments to the QB and then after he signed the LOI they back off on the promises made. Looks like a court will ultimately decide how binding the promises were. One report was that the QB was promised a considerable amount of money would be deposited into his checking account 24 hours after he signed the LOI. That deposit never happened.
One of the real problems with NIL is the fact that there is supposed to be no contact, direct or indirect, between the NIL collective and the school. Anybody who believes that is happening is naive or mentally incompetent.
Apparently, the problem at UF is there is contact between Napier (and his staff) and the collective. They just disagree on who should be recruited and how much he should be paid.

Remember the days (not that terribly long ago) when college ADs were primarily ex-coach back-slappers?
Strong business acumen not required.
Now the smart AD selection for a college athletics program is a person with a combination of meaningful athletic department experience + a strong business acumen (and better yet if also an attorney or someone with a good understanding about business law). Back-slapping is still important, but not the overarching priority.
Looks like college FB and BB coaches will need to have some of the business acumen that smart AD choices currently possess.

The Napier family (I believe that they are from pretty far north of Atlanta) are smart and nice people (I had met Billy’s dad briefly at a HS FB game in Conyers, GA a few decades ago).
Unfortunately for B.Napier, it looks like he has to simultaneously learn big time FB coaching and the newly complex business + legal aspects of being a coach in the NIL era.
The advantage for experienced coaches (I.e., those that are not ‘too experienced’) is that making the adjustments to NIL factors will be easier for the Norville, Doreen, Hafley, Swinney, Narduzzi, etc. types to manage.

I believe the conference commissioners will have to put something in place and a group to oversee it. It would be like the NCAA but not the NCAA. Not sure why the NCAA cannot regulate this and still allow the NIL’s. Makes no sense to me. The commissioners or school presidents should come to some agreement on giving the NCAA their balls back.
All that’s going on now would have easily invoked the death penalty in the 80’s and we see how that worked out for SMU.
