The question has been raised on this board a few times about what the end game with these conference realignments is. Pair that with Dabo’s comments about an eventual 50+ team division and I’m curious as to what the board thinks that division will be made up of.
I do see the top 64 teams breaking away from the NCAA and having their own rules and leadership.
No Doubters (22) Based on either being a traditional/historical power, OR the leading state school.
Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Florida, Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Clemson, FSU, UNC, Miami, Penn St, Ohio St, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska, USC, UCLA, Washington, Oregon, Notre Dame
Tier 2 (11) Successful, competitive
NC State, Va Tech, Pitt, Auburn, Arkansas, Iowa, Michigan St, Utah, Colorado, West Virginia, Oklahoma St
Tier 3 (22) Mid Level power 5 teams
Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU, Iowa St, UK, Ole Miss, Miss St, USuCk, Kentucky, Louisville, Ga Tech, Virginia, Syracuse, Minnesota, Perdue, Maryland, Washington St, Oregon St, Cal, Stanford, Arizona, Arizona St

I do believe that if this does eventually happen, we will see all other sports revert back to a regional based conference alignment.

I see it ending just like the NFL with the NFC/AFC. I believe there will be just 2 major conferences with several dif divisions within, each conf will have its own playoff with 6-8 teams and the winners of each conf playoff will face off in the National Title. Thats the way its headed to me with how lopsided the amount of teams will be in the SEC and BIG10 after awhile compared to the others.

What concerns me is the number of games some teams will be forced to play. You are asking a lot of the players to compete in a dozen regular season games and perhaps another four, five or six games in the post season.

With that many games it's going to become very watered down football where any team (even the ones who barely make it into the playoff) can luck up and win the Natty.

With that many games it's going to become very watered down football where any team (even the ones who barely make it into the playoff) can luck up and win the Natty.
Typically, a Wake or USUC are teams who would never sniff a playoff or Natty. I don't see that changing with the new format. There could be a TCU or team like Bama last year who lost a couple of games during the season but gets hot late in the season make some noise.

Wake would have made a 12 team playoff the year before last you know or been on the cusp and would have made one in 2006. Very few teams in the ACC can say that including the other three in NC.

Conference championship games will remain a must-have component.
Without conference the possibility of reaching a conference championship game, then half of the ‘super 64’ league teams will end up with an apathetic fan base by mid-season.
Apathetic fan base = less exciting TV programming = crappy ratings for games that otherwise could be spun as ‘outside chance teams competing for a shot in the conference championship game’ teams.
As for the ‘unthinkable’ or ‘immoral’ aspects of requiring amateur players to potentially play 16 games, that’s easy.
First off, immoral and unthinkable are excluded words in the lexicon of sports networks, conference bosses, athletic directors … and which, because of the money involved, also includes university and college presidents.
If 64 teams become the makeup of a super league, then you can bet on a 16 game season for the two finalists.

I think it will eventually become a semi pro league where the players will not be students and will have no ties to the universities. And then the teams will either pay the universities for the use of their name or the universities will sponsor the teams .

be a need to be affiliated with schools as it will be a true farce, and the teams will eventually be minor league NFL teams with less appeal.

Ding! Ding! We have a winner ladies and gents.
The crowd saying, "it's too many games are still in the old way of thinking about these Athlete-Students"! I am not saying, it was a good idea - but remember the NFL use to play 5 preseason games and then a 16 game regular season?
Why? What made them want to do that? Money.
It(CFB) has expanded to more games because of money; a couple of times in it's lifespan. There is nothing telling me "The Driver"(Money) won't require more games!
From a health and safety standpoint - is it the best? Not under yesterday's rules; but in today's game the way they call it - I think it's doable.
Before long these kids on the NIL contracts will basically tell you to kick rocks if you bring up academics. Wait until big time H.S. football stars come in with a huge entitlement mentality because they have already tasted some NIL money. A kid that young with some dollars in the bank account; has the potential to be "BAD"!
Where was the A.D. from that said, "What Have We Done"?

With 16 teams each in South, East, North, and West conferences.... with 2 divisions each.... 11 or 12 game regular season.... 7 games against division.... 2 or 3 cross-division.... 2 out of conference (no games against non-league teams) .... NFL-type seedings with conference winners (determined by regular season record) receiving first round byes.... Seeds 5-16 would have to play 16 games to win championship in 12 game regular season scenario.... Maybe could have 1 or 2 preseason scrimmages to help get $$ to smaller in-state programs.... Finally, could have record-funding-conf realignment system to maintain performance / quality and allow non-league schools opportunities to replace non-improving cellar-dwellers....

Why not? We can all guess and then see how wrong we were. At my age, I'll probably be dead before this all happens, so it won't matter to me anyway.
My speculation would be based on whether or not the B1G and SEC teams would break away leaving the Big 12 out or whether they would accept the Big 12 schools into the breakaway group. If Big 12 is excluded I would think it would be around 48 teams. If Big 12 is included I would think it would be in the 60-64 range.
Another unknown is whether or not the breakaway group would allow the Vandys and Rutgers of the conferences to come along with them.
But, with all that said, here is my guess.
1. 64 teams breakaway.
2. 8 divisions, 8 teams each.
3. 16 game playoff for national championship.
