Oct 18, 2022, 12:15 PM

Reading the tea leaves; I was wondering if some of the senior leaders would call a players only meeting.
I was hoping they would.
I imagined KJ Henry taking lead and getting in some butt about intensity, holding up the standard even if you are not a starter, etc.

We have depth - no need to not go all out! Trust that your teammate that will spell you will get it done at a high level. Run and react and do what you planned to do all week for that opponent.

Our raw talent is crazy. But, we need somebody to step up and be that "Alpha" who gets fired up and into some dudes rear=end when they aren't playing up to their potential.

Agreed. Henry seems like the best choice for that, but while we have incredible athletes, we don't really have a Wilkins/Boulware-style leader out there.

I think our linebackers are fine players - but it is hard to replace a defensive coach on the field - like Boulware or Skalski.

This may be unpopular, but I sense that Wiggins has a shot at being that guy in the coming couple of years. He is green and inexperienced, but I have been watching him on the field in the Valley this season and he is awesome. He has so much talent and speed, and tremendous instincts. Once he gets more comfortable with schemes, and gets more confident, he is going to be an absolute baller.

Hopefully they talked about tackling.

I understand sometimes the other guy just makes a play, but the FSU game would have been in control from the start if they made tackles that were there for them. And the FSU game was not the first time missed tackles have been an issue.

I think we are going to see a very focused and motivated defense against cuse.

it was the holding call thus far.... wait, nevermind.

I have no idea what went on in the player's only meeting.

If it was to air complaints against the coaches (schemes, coaching, personality, rotations, etc.) then it is a bad thing. I doubt very seriously that was the topic of the meeting. The players seem to have bought in to all the new coaches.

If it was to call out a few bad apples who have not bought in and for the players to tell them - face to face and point blank - their attitude will not be tolerated, then it is a good thing.

(Here is the most probable reason for the meeting - in my wild guessing.) The older players called the meeting to point out that the defense is underperforming this year and that everyone needs to step up, confess their sins to everyone else, to repent of those sins, and to commit to hold each other accountable - in the game, in practice, in the meeting room, in personal film study, and everywhere else.

There was a thread on here a few days ago about the D not having the killer mentality. For the 11 guys on the field there is no "garbage time." The only acceptable action is all out effort, every play. Score doesn't matter. Down and distance doesn't matter. Time left in the game doesn't matter.

If I were a coach, this would be what I had printed on the tee shirts the players wear under their pads:

Every practice, every day.
Every game, every play.

After the Wake game, Dabo said some of the players got embarrassed. After the FSU game he said the defense had lost it's mind.

Maybe the players are telling the other players. "You're not just embarrassing yourself. You're embarrassing me."

bretfsu® I agree.

In my mind; it's almost exactly how you stated with the older players. Sometimes young people feel like: "I have time to do that later; thus they do not have that sense of urgency"!

sidebar / off topic somewhat note: a reporter was interviewing NBA player James Weisman. In it he goes; "I don't know, i'm still young, i'm 21"! But, he's entering year 3 and still hasn't done anything!

Anyway, some of the key players who have more elgibility after this season probably have some of this mindset!
You never know if tomorrow will come. You have to go all out. And go all out all the time.

There should be plenty of examples out there for them to reference about: "you never know if you will get another chance to do the right thing or to go all out"! Don't put it off for later; do it now!

Hopefully, this was what it takes to get more fire! We had "some fire" but not enough.

We have to play with more passion and more sense of urgency! We have the athletes - do we have the "want to"?
The coaches can't give you that heart it takes! Coaches can't do it for you! Sometimes the play call is not the best; but supreme effort and trusting instincts and "making it right using raw ability combined with heart and motivation" can make it work out still.

I hear you Bret. Just unsure where that "all out effort every play" fits in with the "we win by any amount we dance" philosophy.
