WR Room

Sep 25, 2023, 6:39 PM

No doubt Saturday's game was a gut punch. We were one bad play from putting this game away before Mafah's missed block and the scoop and score.

What jumped out to me was how electric Brown was compared to everyone else in our WR room. He was the only player who could put any fear into the FSU secondary. Sure both Beaux and Adam made difficult catches and Stellato played with some missing grit. However, where was the speed or even fast twitch to put the CB's on their heals or to keep the safeties out of the box, Brown was the only WR keeping anyone from cheating up. Minus Brown, in only a few instances did I see real separation. Cade had to be next to perfect on almost every throw as most were contested.

Two thoughts. Why can't we seem to scheme guys open? You would think, at least once in a while, you would see receivers running open. I can count on one hand the number of times I remember seeing that on Saturday. We need to go and find some electric athletes on the perimeter. Wesco and Moore on day one will both be more athletic than everyone currently on our team with the possible exception of Brown. Even if it means we need to find a super raw speedster, we should roll the dice. I am hopeful we keep Wesco and Moore in this class, I am sure the pressure on them to decommit is at an all time high.

What is very concerning about our WR room is that Hamp Greene was next man up when the game was on the line, rather than Hanafin, Kelly and Johnson. It doesn't give me confidence that they will be leading us back to WRU.

Riley has his work cut out for him, hes going to need to get creative to get Brown, Williams, and Stellato on the field at least 2 of those at a time imo.

Riley did have Quinton Johnson last year (6'4 high pointer) but there not one of those guys on the team now, wish Ngata would have stayed he wouldve benefited greatly.

I think we rolled the dice on a speedster

and he tore 3 abductor muscles against Florida Atlantic. Hopefully he can come back without losing any speed next year.
